I just paid for my own fuel for the first time in 20 years.
I didn't actually look at the price
Below is the fuel consumption for the first half of the trip
I won't be getting these results in the Grenadier I bet
This was pushing hard and mostly on the motorway at 110-145kmh but the inevitable road works slowed me down to 80kmh a lot

Which just highlights the silliness of those people who make the decision to purchase a diesel or petrol based upon the pump price they saw that afternoon :)

I was thinking of just that today, especially of a mate who has been boasting about his Y62 he just recently purchased, I just smirk at him now....he's starting to regret selling his diesel

Where I am at the moment diesel is $0.10 (10 cents) more expensive than petrol
So it would cost $9 more to fill the Diesel Grenadier than the petrol
But the diesel is significantly more economical so you make the $9 back up easily
Someone can do the actual maths for me.

Tax and insurance are the same for petrol and diesel?

But don't forget the extra cost of diesel maintenance... So, diesel is ok just for big mileage...
I posted some time ago that I contacted 3 BMW dealers and finally a specialist BMW workshop
The dealers were no help but the specialist said the service costs he charges for a BMW B57 & B58 were almost identical.

Out or warranty - diesel has the potential to cost more as parts that fail are more expensive (on average) than petrol. Newer cars under long warranties are of no concern to anyone. I mean, the car maker that shall not be named, charge $420 for a basic service of their PETROL vehicles. If a Diesel GREN is less than $400, then it should be ok. What is he service cost guide in OZ?

Except if diesel is $0.20 and petrol is $0.10. We must have the percent difference to do the maths.

there are many good reasons for the diesel, especially the 6 cylinders from bmw, which are just wonderful. i had some of these. unfortunately it is so - in germany - that the image of the diesel is wrongly bad. there are more and more driving bans for inner cities and an increase in taxes is being considered. to the problems that may
can come with the complicated emission control.
this and the great running culture and sound of the petrol engine have persuaded me to choose one.
who knows, maybe the last car - in the sector - that i will buy.

And by the way,
I drive about 10000 km a year. If I calculate with the current prices and take into account the additional consumption of the petrol engine - approx. 3 liters - I currently come up with approx. 450 € additional costs for fuel consumption. the diesel costs more for the inspection (once a year), needs AdBlue and costs more vehicle tax.
in the end i don't care.

Diesel is $2.05 and petrol is $1.95
A gallon, I guess...:D Here in Italy 1.85 a liter... Diesel and petrol are alternatively more expensive... In the latest months diesel for the first time ever was more expensive than petrol. Now petrol is again more expensive than diesel. As other people said, ordered diesel or petrol on that basis is a nonsense. Unfortunately, sentimentally approved laws and rules are more influent on the decisions. After years of pumping diesel engines, Diesel gate and the media, relocate diesel engines in a dark area... By the way, I hope that the obsession with electric motors will be overcome by a more reasonable technological neutrality. Synthetic fuels are significantly more environmentally friendly, full cycle, than electric motors, full cycle.

You are right with everything but do not hope for a big discount regarding the vehicle tax. I calculated both for Germany before I ordered. The tax for the petrol one is nearly as high as the one for the diesel engine!

The UK…..currently around £1.65 a litre for diesel and near;y always 20p a litre cheaper for pertrol (E10, 95 octane). It’s been more expensive for a number of years now for diesel. They prices switched when our government told us to get rid of those silly petrol cars and get a diesel about 20yrs ago.

Now anyone with a diesel is the devil incarnate and a menace to human kind, diesel bans in cities are on their way and anything but the lastest ICE vehicles are charged for going any where near a city in quite a few locations.

I chose petrol due to the lower amount of miles I now do, there is always the chance that synthetic fuel will become popular, and they could possibly be converted more easily to hydrogen. I don’t know whether I was right but either way they do sound great and most of the reviewers said it’s the pick of the bunch 😆

I would explore an ECU map that greatly reduced fuel economy though, not interested in more power but a fuel saving than I am in, if it is proven to be more than just snake oil !!

So, unlike in the past, I no longer have to feel like the one who pays double for fuel, being in Italy. The transition to synthetic fuels should be practically automatic for petrol-powered engines, except for some adaptation of the injectors, perhaps, and of the software. Not so for hydrogen which is a completely different world, whether we are talking about combustion or fuel cells, in both cases with problems of storage, pressures and temperatures that are difficult to control. It would be interesting to see what is hidden under the skin of the Ineos prototype...
