Diesel B57 Diesel Fuel Economy

I was getting 27mpg from my diesel Fieldmaster before i rejected it. Waiting for its replacement doing the same type of short runs arond the countryside I have a loan Grenadier which is petrol and does 19.5 mpg.

On a long motorway trip of 8 hrs yesterday i got 23.7mpg from it.
Is this calculated at the pump or taken from the trip computer? For us across the ponders, that’s about 19.7mpg (US) for the petrol and 22.5mpg (US) for the diesel.

Hello Eric - We are in Trossachs till Tuesday then Oban then Arran . Spectacular drives pending but plotting routes between fuel stops :)

Over the years I have adopted a " splash and dash" policy, when the fuel tank is half full when ever I pass a ⛽️ station I fill up.
But beware the midges they are bad this year especially this time of the year, since you're in the Trossachs now you have worked that out. Stock up on "Smidge" spray on repellent in Oban. Or use my plan B, buy the wife a yellow T - shirt. They leave me alone then and go for her.

What about off-road conditions?

I just took delivery of my diesel, and have been sand driving with it for the last. 3 days.

Here’s what I found:
-16 psi on 285/70r17 BF Goodrich KM3 MT’s
-center diff locked continuously
-trail driving & open beach - slow to 60K’s
-moderately loaded with camping gear for just myself… fridge, fuel, water, swag, roof rack and some other accoutrements. Nothing crazy heavy.
-some periods of prolonged idle in the morning to warm up before driving 15 min max @ 3 times.
- didn’t push the throttle too hard, only 600Km’s on the truck.


I fueled up right before getting on the ferry and again when I got off.
I consumed 41L in the course of the 3 days over 175km
That pencils out to 23.5L/100. Felt excessive to me. Would have liked to see less fuel used.

Anyone else experience better fuel economy as the engine breaks in?

I’ve got 2,000Km’s ahead of me on highway for the next week. Will report my findings.
We got 19.5L/100km low range across the Simpson close to GVM if that helps (16/18psi F/R or thereabouts). About the same in the dunes around Coral Bay, although that’s spot not average consumption and at 20psi. Would’ve been >200kg lighter at the time.

I wonder were you in high range/locked? If so perhaps that would account for the difference.
General gravel roads for us (high range/locked) were more like 14-15L/100kms.

Yeah! Coastal California is awesome. No shortage of good Mexican food in Long Beach, go visit the aquarium of the Pacific in downtown LB. It’s always on my list when I’m in town.

Beware the sticky finger locals though, once your truck arrives keep anything strapped to it under lock and key until you’re in Northern California and up into Oregon/washington.

Big Sur is worth a drive and visit, that’s coast route 1 (PCH) once you’re further north go visit the avenue of giants at redwood NP, way better than Yosemite. Less people. Although Yosemite is a gem.

Coastal oregon and Washington are amazing as well…
Canada up to Alaska. Primo, but I haven’t driven that part personally. Looking forward to hearing your prospective routes!

After 16,000km I am showing about 11.6L/100km based on fuel used from the bowser. Running the KO2s at 39psi front and rear. Average speed for last week of daily driving average 47km/hr.

Highway 60% (lots of stop start crap traffic conditions and then some 110kmph then back to 70kmph and more stop start etc etc).
Rural asphalted road 40%. Nothing over 80kmph on the trek home.

I'm ok with this but it's not fantastic. On 100kmph straight line travel in reading at 10.0L/100 for long stints. Can't get anything below this really in any situation.

Our consumption is steadily falling as engine and drivetrain bed in. Now getting just over 30 miles per UK gallon on a decent run which seems very good for a heavy truck with aerodynamics slightly better than a brick.

And yep - followed another grenny (donny gray with rooftop tent and 270 awning) for the last 100km or so of it.

9.8 average use on that trip is better than I can get in any situation so far!!!

What's a long run and speed, I'm guessing motorway or A roads? I'm getting around 26mpg but I am using loads of adblue whilst waiting for a repair

I get 28 mpg driving B and C class roads on runs when there are no stop starts or cold starts.

Yep, motorway and A roads mostly though some more demanding making up about 5% of a journey. I also use a lot of Adblue compared to previous L405.

when I say a lot, I mean 60% of tank in about 1,000 miles. I'm not sure what normal use is but I'm hoping the EGR repair will sort it out and hopefully the economy will be better too

My AdBlue consumption for the first 6k Km was about 6L. So about 1.6L per thousand miles. No towing or "off road" ...mainly a return highway run down the east coast of Aus. Brisbane to Hobart Tasmania. av speed about 90-95 kmh

Initial plan is to work northwards Joshua Tree to Sequoia to Yosemite and only then across to the coast route. Thanks for tips, we’ll post updates. Vehicle is pending Customs release.
