In our part of the world... the road and traffic authorities doesn't normally relate the words "sensibly driven" with 80-85mph.... (130-138 kmh)... depending on the open road limit (100kmh or 110kmh) exceeding the posted limit from 20kmh-40+ kmh can set you back anywhere between several hundred dollars to over $1,000 plus numerous points loss....
So, I'll take your word for it! ;)

I believe you are on the money regarding the fuel economy penalty of the K02 tyres... probably closer to 15% ... or $.0.30 /litre at current Aus. prices... 🙄
Thanks. I have done many thousands of miles in Australia and, even with a UK license, speeding is out. The UK can't afford many motorway police any longer and fixed and mobile speed cameras are well flagged on Waze. Of course my 80-85mph was on the continent where it is legal for any of the authorities reading this. FWIW my previous SDV8 Range Rover would do 38mpg at 85mph on Grabber ATs.

Yep! a few years ago in Australia some wag entered a V8 diesel Range Rover in a well publicised fuel economy event where it was competing against petrol and hybrids. Based on a formula which took gross weight and raw consumption figures into account, the diesel Rangie ran away with several "1sts" :ROFLMAO: . Lots of red faces in the greenie camp and excuses but he proved the point!! I suspect the comparatively streamlined shape of the RR and its (lesser) weight are significant in its excellent fuel consumption figures. I was very tempted to buy a second hand "full fat"RR TDV8 at one stage.... but I don't have a big shed!

That's the wet dream of the oil companies, the Arabs and a lot of planet-rescuers.

There are very few large petrol vehicles in these parts. And lots of small cars!
New Zealand is pretty remote but the roads are great...virtually no potholes. I presume they spend fuel excise appropriately.
And here, our roads, particularly Interstate 10 between my home and Tucson, are getting really bad, with ruts from the heavy trucks and cracks with the roads literally disintegrating from the summer heat, winter freeze and monsoon rains. They are working on sections of road, but it's a slow process. We may have the most roads, but they aren't the best! I'm sure the ride in my Grenadier will be better than my Kia on the rough spots.

Yeesh. Assuming you're reporting in Imperial gallons then MPG is not looking great for North America.

In the Gren on highway today at 110km set by cruise control (and it held that on the ODO for a while), my GPS gave me a reading of 110-111km - seems pretty accurate on these two scales.
Mine is 114 on cruise = 110 on gps. 104-105 on cruise is 100 gps

I only purchased my 2003 1.9l VW TDI based on MPG. Everything else I did’t even bother to look. If we had a Canning Stock Route I would probably pay more attention.

Yes, my readings are Imperial gallons - but you pay much less for fuel compared to us over here even considering the American gallon difference!

Not entirely true. We pay for it in tax subsidies and mideast wars.

Good for you! Oh, to have the luxury to not notice prices or mpg.

I also don't live in CA (although I do travel there for work - painful pricing for sure). Heck, in NJ we are not allowed by law to pump our own fuel and it still cost less than PA next door!

I ran my tank “dry” theoretically having been through the Amber and Red warnings, and then did another 12 miles when it stopped reporting - and was only able to add 80.87 litres when the tank capacity is 90 litres. Anyone’s view if the tolerances are set too cautiously? Thanks, John

One. Theory on this is that when off-roading you are not always level so they need enough fuel in the tank after the red warning so the car does not cut out despite the position . ( had it happen in my patrol ) this is the only reason i can think of them doing it this way .

Another observation the Gren economy gauge tops at 30L/100km under full acceleration. Once hitting its top speed it will do 25-26L/100km (been told by a friend in Mexico) . Not sure how accurate that is . This is where we need the scientists who live in Germany to investigate on the Autobahn.

:)

I ”get” the off reading reason for caution!

After running dry like you said, I usually can still drive 50km, and still am able to fill only around 86 liter. Therefore, yes, the warning is too early.

On the drive with Stu they said the computer becomes more accurate with time. If you don’t have a diesel and have the balls I say run it dry a couple times.
