Grenadier vs 2024 Land Cruiser

I'm really curious about the 70 series update. We still won't get it here, but I want to see what they "modernized."

Seems like a bust to me. Nice looking, but smaller than 200 series, 4 cylinder engine, electric steering-never heard of that. If it had the turbo V6 I would look at it. Will still go with the Grenadier.
I missed that. I thought he said it would have a range of motors to suit different markets? I assumed it would come with a version of the 300 TD, at least for Australia.

I just watched not only the release video from Toyota but also Indy reveals of the 1955 I think it was and the Land Cruiser. Strange model nomenclature, perhaps for the US only market, idk. Having owned many various Land Cruisers over the years I am left completely uninterested. Big meh in my book. If this is their “revamp” of the 70 series as the Toyota presenter implied, wow big disappointment for the rest of world market

All I really need. Paint it to look like the 50 series my dad drove me all over the big horn mountains in and life is good

So is $144k Dave. OK, you need to add a bit to the Cruiser still, but it also has a lot your IG spec doesn't.
Not sure about his order, he says it was just made more quickly, but who knows.
I like the look of the GR Sport and it would be my no 1 pick after the Grenadier.
At least it has character along with front and rear lockers etc.
The new Prado/250 looks ok too
My line in the sand for Grenadier was $130K so I would be out too.

Looking at some comments on other threads here, I think there may be some egg on faces. I personally think Toyota may have just knocked it out of the park for the mid-size 4x4 market. It's as though they looked at the Grenadier and realised just how much unnecessary fluff they could toss out of the Prado. I've only seen the in depth look at the base model but I see a reassuring lack of powered stuff. Manual tailgate, manual seats, cloth trim, no third row seating BUT proper locking centre AND locking rear diff as STANDARD. All of this is smart on Toyota's part and will potentially eat into Jeep's Wrangler market share.

The biggest thing however is that I have to admit, I don't hate the look of it. Or more to the point, I don't fall asleep looking at it.

This new vehicle is a bit of an all over the place concept really. It has more in common re internal and external looks with the FJ Cruiser than anything else. The internal layout does nothing for me really.

And it sucks to live in the US - how can you just put a 4 cylinder in that - what a travesty.

I think the sales will do well. Road and Track said it was a Prado ( as a US person I don't know what that means since they never came here). The 1958 model with round headlights, mechanical, waterproof heated cloth seats, lots of other parts things mechanical vs electric and a $US 50k base price will attract a lot of folks. The 1958 also has a hybrid engine with 326 hp and 465 lb-ft of torque. (The V-8 200 Series made 381 hp, but just 401 lb-ft of torque). Not all of those looking for a simple, competent 4X4 (that doesn't cost US$85K) are driving across the Outback or camping for 3 weeks, so if Toyota can keep the prices low and it is durable, they will be very very successful.
(forgot to add: center and rear electronically locking differentials come standard. So does a 2400-Watt inverter)

My wife and I watched a couple of YT videos of today's 2024 Land Cruiser press day, and she says that she still prefers the Grenadier. "It has way more character."

I agree.

Plus Grenadier is built more tough, has a better engine, front lockers, more ground clearance, more space inside.

The new Land Cruiser will do well, it's a good vehicle, but doesn't come close to generating the enthusiasm I have for the Grenadier.

What do you think?

They announced the Prado Landcrusier and the 70 Series Landcrusier in Australia today.

But I think the US only gets the "Prado" Landcrusier, without the Prado.

The "Prado" Landcrusier also lacks carrying capacity compared to the IG, before you hit gross vehicle mass (GVM), at least in Australia. For larger cars, turbo charged 4 cyclinders are often overworked. I still prefer to the IG.

Shooting from the cuff with pure opinions here, only because they were asked for...

- The looks don't do it for me (I prefer the GX550.... and I'm not really a fan of that).
- I don't doubt that it makes plenty of power, just not a huge fan of the 4cyl hybrid (again, I'd prefer the GX550, but not a huge fan of the V6TT due to the reliability issues being found on early Tundra/Sequoias)
- I can't get on board with the interior design/layout
- Rear locker and front sway bar disconnect is awesome; but, as was stated when the 4th gen Tacoma was announced, the competition is offering F&R lockers now
- Surprisingly low ground clearance for something so "off road focused"
- Awesome to see that it comes with recovery points
- I'm positive it will sell very well.
- Their official marketing video is full of cringe when describing that it is "perfect for activities such as overlanding"
- I think this is confirmation that the 4Runner is either disappearing or becoming much softer
- I just can't get over the fact that they chose to use Eldoret Blue w/ a Scottish White roof for their marketing vehicle

Thanks for the video. I can absolutely say that for me, the Toyota didn’t have the draw away from the IG that I thought it would.

I do like the pop up rear glass in the “base” version😂

Here are some stats from moto1. The Bronco is badlands without the 35.

I think that they are going to move the base 4Runner lower. I'd say that this LandCrusier is to the Grenedier as the Grenedier is to the G-Wagon.

The base 1958 is screaming for bigger tires and some underbody protection. It does give me pause, and if there were NOT a IG coming, this would probably be my next car.

To me, it is more upscale FJ than Landcrusier.

Funny, the video doesn't show the light blue/white top one IIRC??

Here is the blue one. Heritage Blue

I really like the new direction for Land Cruiser in the US. Never having experienced a Prado in this market; I think it’s brilliant marketing for the “nearly played out overlanding” cliche. I can picture how successful they will be with selling upgrades and TRD stuff for it. Toyota really needs this success to help them pay for a transition to electric vehicles. I don’t see this as direct competition to the Grenadier, but it will be a big success at that $50-60k USD price point.

I don't think I'll find any new 4x4 without a front solid axle interesting. There are already plenty of options, and many with more exciting power trains. The new Prado isn't a large departure over the previous, nor is it very different from the 4runner.

If Toyota brings back another solid axle 4x4 to the states, then they'll have my attention.

That and I didn't want holes drilled through these body panels.
I wonder if Ineos would sell more chequerplate kits if the holes were predrilled in all vehicles and just filled with grommets or painted bolts?
