Another thing on this is the Toyota reliability is basically based on the engine and the BMW is known. The new Toyota hybrids aren’t and while I like the idea of a land cruiser I don’t see how a battery hybrid can last as long. I’m 41 yrs old and the Grenadier could last me the rest of my years (with a backup vehicle). I just don’t have faith in long term ownership of hybrids. I really hope I’m wrong though.
Just to play devil's advocate, the hybrid systems used in the Tundra and Sequoia (same TTV6) are based on the tried and true Prius, which have been very reliable, although it powers through the torque converter (actually a more simple design). The TTV6 in the Tundra, Sequoia and now GX is derived off of the VA35-FTS engine, which has been on the road in Lexus since the 2016 MY with good success (biggest complaint was an error in the software detecting oil consumption that was not occuring). The B58 has only been on the road an additional MY.
I'm not familiar with the 4 Cyl turbo Toyota is using in the new Tacoma is newer, so if that is what gets put in the Land Cruiser time will tell, although Toyota has a history of making bullet proof inline 4 cylinders.
The B58, which may be BMWs best engine to date, is the biggest question mark on the actual build of the Grenadier in my opinion. It is built more solid elsewhere though. I have never been a fan of BMW engines for high mileage reliability, and the resale market tends to agree.
For powertrain reliability, Toyota has a pretty good track record, especially on their Japanese built motors. In tech, trim, frame quality, etc., Toyota has been a mixed bag.
