Lets analyze UK to US pricing. UK Trailmaster 69,240 GBP including 20% Value Add Tax (Sales Tax), and OTR. In the UK On The Road (OTR) price is essentially the total cost to a buy a new car and drive it on the road legally. That means you're covered for the car's first year of registration, its new number plates, road tax, pre delivery inspection, delivery charges to the point of purchase, insurance, any finance handling fees and, more often than not, some fuel in the tank. The US price for the Trailmaster is $79,190 which doesn't include any of the OTR costs or taxes. So the UK price net of OTR and VAT is probably around 56,500 GBP or around $70,000. So if we add 2.5% import tax $1,750 and say $2,000 shipping and say $2,500 CAFE = $76,250. So with dealer margin you get to $79,190. If you look at a Defender it is about the same differential. A base Defender 90 X Dynamic SE with no options is 50,100 GBP without OTR and VAT or $62,124, so add 2.5% duty, $1,000 in CAFE, $2,000 to ship you get to $66,677. In the US it is $68,400 So UK to US prices have completely normalized. Not what I was expecting, or my math is wrong!! It does look really expensive against a Defender.
OTR does not include insurance in UK.

I just priced a 23 F350 single rear wheel, crew cab, Lariat, 8 ft bed. It came very close to the IG and it has better fuel economy. So I hate to say it, the IG would have been a marginal tow vehicle for my needs and overpriced on everything else. It's a math equation at this point and the IG keeps losing. I really wanted the IG to win. I'm a buyer of one used but not new.

(Most people won't cross shop those vehicles, but I need to.)
That’s an interesting cross shop for certain and one I have trouble understanding. If towing was a priority for you I’m surprised you would consider an SUV/wagon at all, but jumping right to a F350 makes the comparison a bit unfair. And physically, they’re no where near one another - the pickup’s wheel base is FIVE FEET! longer. Not the overall length of the truck mind you, just the wheel base.

With those vehicles you get way more amenities, and save $20k. The people buying Broncos and Jeeps aren't spending $100k on a utility SUV that gets 14mpg, and the people buying Defenders and Grand Wagoneers are getting cooled leather seats, walnut interior trim, and refrigerated console storage.

If want walnut interior trim and refrigerated console the Grenadier is not for you. The great thing is no one is forcing you to buy it.

My build quickly blows past $80,000 US with the minimum amount of add ons. I am having a hard time justifying this price when the price for the 2024 Lexus GX (US version of the Prado) is projected to start around $59,000 US. Body on frame construction, locking differential, proven reliability, and a parts and service network everywhere. Anyone else thinking this way?

I’m going to go out on a limb and guess that subscribers on a Prado forum would light up the switchboard on this one.

You can finance the purchase, you don't have to pay cash.
You could finance 50% (whatever %) with a trade in vehicle
You can finance with a final balloon payment after 5 years so again you are only financing 50/60/70%
Many people, like me, get a car allowance from a company to provide a vehicle so if I chose to finance 50% of it then my loan repayments would be $960/month out of the $1,500/month I get for a car allowance
You can work out any other percentages you want but that doesn't make me rich.
Out of interest many people who drive expensive cars and private planes don't own them, they lease them, usually through a company they own, and claim it as a business expense
Nice car allowance! You hiring?!

I can totally understand why people are bailing on the grenny. that 15% price increase they imposed is brutal. I'm trying to get to 75. even at that price it's steep. it just doesn't seem like you get enough of anything in particular. however,... I have always thought of it as a lifetime car, even though we don't know that yet.

There are many different models of Land Cruisers being made today. Prada would probably be at the bottom of my list due its size and ugly front grill. Nice vehicles though.

That front grill is a total killer on the LX and RX. Some of the new Tacoma‘s look pretty good though, so maybe the forerunner will miss out on that design aesthetic.

This whole project was launched with the idea of bringing out a defender 110 in the old style. At some point it changed. Maybe it has to do with the fact that modern cars have so much that they have to incorporate that you really just can’t do that anymore. It does make me wonder why land rover Didn’t make their new SUV. Look more like the grenadier? There’s really no reason not to keep closer to the styling. Ineos did it.

I always thought that the price of a similar equipped new Land Rover defender would be the cap on the price for this car, unfortunately, they’re treating it as the base. The less for more concept.

So in keeping with the British theme “, and now for something completely different“…

What we have now is, a baby G wagon tribute vehicle. I just don’t know where that really fits in the marketplace.

Plus, we need to replace my wife’s x5 and get my daughter a car all in the next six months. I might just push all this off to next fall and see where everything lays.

I just feel like any else has pushed this vehicle into a dead corner of the market, where they are too high priced and too low, volume to actually be viable.

the grenadier is in a weird place. mostly because of pricing. the build quality needs to be exemplary where they're at.

Dead corner of the market and too low to be viable? They only plan to sell 5,000 to 10,000 or so in the US. Maybe 15,000 max based on their total global volume after they can get past the cafe rules.

They are not going to have any problem selling out in the US.

We say 5k to 10k like those will fly out the door. Rover only sold 1,500 Discos in all of 2022. MB sold 7,200 G’s and those are the benchmark.

My perspective is I don’t want those things. I want a well engineered, robust, off road tool for touring.

The Grenadier is absolutely that.

The New Defender does that too, albeit with a VERY different design approach, and because of that approach it comes with a very nice interior, premium sound, etc. for - at least in the context of the US and Canada market - less money than the Grenadier. In my case I could buy the New Defender and a Jeep Wrangler to tow behind it in case of mechanical failure for the price of the Grenadier that I want in Canada.

The New Defender is an excellent touring rig. Unfixable in the bush, and from a brand that has a reputation for needing lots of fixing. That combination gives me a lot of reasons for pause and I would undoubtedly prefer the Grenadier.

But my point is, just because someone is cross shopping them, doesn’t mean the “bougie” bits of the New Defender like the fancy interior and fridge in the console are high on the list of what the user needs. But it does, undeniably, come into the question of “what am I getting for my money”.

Because the Disco buyer bought the Defender. They sold 15k defenders in America and could done more if they didn't have problems with parts

G-wagon at $150K+ is sold out until 2025. I don't think IG will have any problem filling orders:

Grenadier is not in the same class as the discovery and Land Rover is deploying chips, etc. to Defender and Range Rover builds. There are still long waits to build and buy.

I think the people who are comparing this vehicle to the less expensive competition and are claiming that value is not there, are not taking into account the cost of ownership over the life of the vehicle. It is miss leading to only compare the initial purchase price and claim the Grenadier is not worth it. When I see the chassis construction and the power train robustness of the Grenadier it gives me confidence that it will last 20-30 years of severe duty service with minimal unforeseen repair costs. If however I look at the jeeps,broncos,4runners etc I do not see that same mechanical robustness and if subjected to a severe off road use case they will only survive 5-10yrs before major repair costs start creeping in or major upgrades are required to increase their durability. There is a reason why there are a lot of aftermarket manufacturers offering upgraded axles, suspension and other structural reinforcements for jeeps and broncos. I look at it this way, if your intended use case, is to drive it like a mall crawler and trade it in within the next 5 years or less for the next new toy, then yes the Grenadier is not a value proposition for you. If however you intend to use the Grenadier 50% or more of the time off road, or keep it for 20+ years, then I think for these use cases, the Grenadier is the better value and will be cheaper than those other option in the long run. Pay now save more later.

Well, never said it was just USA only regulations however, I am pretty sure if the Grenadier was built as my 86 FJ60 was built it would have cost a lot less since it would not have had back up cameras, all the air bags, park assist, AB, TPMS, Automatic Hazard Warning, ADAS 1, Rear view cameras, Touch screen display, android auto, blue tooth and a few other items. Looking at the Standard Features I see Eco Start Stop and one can only hope that shit can be disconnected.

Forgot to add - automatic transmission.

DANG, Actually said Uncle Sam, so Zimm was right.
Yea, but, your stripper 20k kia has to meet those regs too, and it isn't like they weren't in place when they started this project. I love my fj60's but, i'm rather sure my survivbility is a lot less in every accident scenario in them. I'm biased though. I bitched about paying for an airbag in my 95 mustang gt when I bought it. At mile 538 I did 50mph into an oak thats still there. I walked out. A broken thumb and some glass in my face. I'm cool with the cost of safety regs.

Has anyone found any price ‘hack’ in pricing the Trialmaster or Other one that gives a price break over the standard and adding bits?

I don’t need the air snorkel, and I don’t want Aluminum rims, so it would have to be a goof bundle to make either a savings.
nope. the piddly i saved wasnt worth the resale value kill.
