Fun fact and in the last days of black history month; cowboys was a term used to describe black ranchers. White men went by the name Cowhands. The term Cowboy was meant to be derogatory as"boy" was widely still used as a negative term to call black men. Fun fact number 2, Lone ranger was based off of Bass Reeves who was black. Rode a white horse, used a silver dollar versus silver bullet and had a Native American assisting his US Marshall operations. .

Not sure about the history, but I live in the land of BIG ranches (think desert version of the Yellowstone series) and the term Cowboy is a badge of honor and pride among them. These are extremely hard-working people of all ethnicities.

I thought it came from ranching cattle.... Stole this from Google; "The term "cowboy" comes from the Spanish word vaquero, which means "one who manages cattle from horseback". The word vaquero comes from vaca, which means "cow" in Spanish.

Never said the origin came from white cowboys. Never discounted the work of today's modern cowboys. Just dropping some history.

Yes the Vaquero taught many people how to ranch but the term Cowboy was used for blacks. Cowhands for whites. Here is added history. As a black man, I spend countless hours teaching my kids black history.

Black On the Range: African American Cowboys of the 19th century

After the Civil War ended in 1865 many African Americans migrated to the West or became free people in the West. While they were enslaved many African Americans had acquired skills that were useful for the cattle industry. Black cowboys were taught the cowboy way of life by vaqueros, who were Mexican or Spanish cowboys, their former slave masters, or Native American cattle handlers. Vaqueros were the original cowboys of the American West and their skills transformed the cattle industry, especially in California.

The term cowboy has interesting origins. Originally, White cowboys were called cowhands, and African Americans were pejoratively referred to as “cowboys.” African American men being called “boy” regardless of their age stems from slavery and the plantation era in the South. Many southerners moved to the West and westerners would have been familiar with southern racial etiquette. So, it is no surprise that the racial issues prevalent in the North and South were also impacting the American West.

Well I have just fitted utility belt to the rear quarter panels. Looked a bit empty without them and convinced myself that molle panels need them. So thats something else to buy

See and I thought "cowboy" originated in 1980 from the movie Urban Cowboy at Gilley's here in Houston. Fun fact, Rodeo starts March 4th and for 3 weeks EVERYONE in Houston is (or can be) a cowboy.

Too be fair I think many words have been used many different ways lol.... Even bukaroos refers to a cowboy, there is never an end.

Here is another fun fact, totally unrelated. During the American Revolution, the term "cowboys" referred to participants in the Forage War in New Jersey. After France threw in with the patriots, the British feared the loss of their West Indies colonies, which were far more financially important than the 13 colonies. So British troops were to be re-deployed from America to the Caribbean. So, how were the British to feed these soldiers? And how were the patriots to thwart them? Both decided to immediately strip the farms of Northern New Jersey of all vegetables and ... cows! Thus cowboys.
