Talking nonsense and general waffle

I might be the only one this waffle applies to; it might confirm I can be a ditz at times. Or it only might confirm this is a very auto savvy group and it’s just me.

What common sense or seemingly intuitive thing did you learn about a car, but embarrassingly late…?

Me — when you look at a car’s gas gauge, there is a subtle little arrow that points toward the side of the car the gas tank is on. NOBODY taught me that! And I suppose it should’ve been intuitive, but nope. Just learned it like 5 years ago.

I always saw the filler cap on the outside so never noticed this but I think a lot of our cars were too old to have this anyway

The arrow wasnt always there it used to be that the nozzle and hose was on the side of the pump that the tank fill up was on (if on the left of the pump then fill up was on drivers side and vice versa).

Mine was about 10 years ago when I found out you can remove the headrests and use the posts to break the side windows if trapped.

My awareness is this fact is about 1 minute now. I had no idea!

How do you 'guys' see the size of uk compared to your own country. Just read about a trip in Australia of 750km/470miles. To us that's a long way, Lands end to the England/Scotland border.
The wife went for an interview 350miles away on Tuesday, I went with her, we drove down on Monday and back on the Tuesday.
She worries about the move as it would be so far away from 'home'.
I would also have to do more driving for work than I currently do.
Maybe it's that our roads are full of traffic with regular traffic jams. We have variable speed limits on the motorways that seem to be designed to catch you out as they have speed cameras ready for when you miss the change in speed whilst concentrating on the cars in front.
When you lot post pictures of your travels it looks amazing and not stressful with empty roads and amazing views of open spaces.

When we visit the UK we take back roads. Empty, with amazing views of open spaces!

Your main roads seem to be empty too. When I'm not in a rush I will avoid the motorways and like you choose the smaller roads on the scenic route.

The UK is truly an overcrowded island, especially when compared to the vast distances our cousins in Australia, Canada and the USA enjoy. Our ‘nanny state’ has been applying strict controls over motorists for many years….. for our safety (well, I hope it’s for our safety rather than as an income generating scheme).

I used to think our wee island (20miles x 25miles roughly) was remote. And by UK standards it may well be. Two hours plus on the ferry, then 50+ miles to the nearest town of note, double that to Glasgow for city stuff. By the standards of some posts I see here on the forum - no, we really aren’t remote. Just pleasantly far enough from (alleged) civilisation.

I spent too many years of my life working in central London. Cramped. Over populated. Smelly. Dirty. Dangerous and generally horrible. But those distant cousins leave their wonderful wide open, vast wildernesses to visit.

exactly, WHY!!! Not been to London since I was a kid for a day trip, thought of going there fills me with dread. You sound as though you live the idyllic life up there. The wife isn't keen on such remoteness but I could sell everything (excluding the Grenadier and the wife's Panda 4x4), to live in the 'middle of nowhere' in the Highlands of Scotland or the Cairngorm national park. We plan to retire to Cornwall and do have a house there that is a residential let ready for us to move to. Not quite as remote as I would like but only a 2min walk to the beach.
I'm heading up to Aberdeen area for work at beginning of December then driving down east coast to Yorkshire, which will be a good drive and always look forward to. Then going to Aviemore for a holiday later on. Spent so many holidays in Scotland as a child, family had a couple of properties we could use, so cheap holidays. 1 by the beach at Bettyhill, the other is the big house, now up for sale, at Ledmore. A837/A835 t-junction

I didn't realise you had 10 working distilleries!! we love a good whisky tour, the wife drinks it, it's alcohol after all!!
Not having to constantly stress about speed cameras seems like heaven, the wife now refuses to go to Wales, the North Wales police force are horrendous. there are reports released of the amount of people caught in 20mph areas in north Wales each month, 6,500-7000. it's just not worth the risk, spend our money elsewhere now. At least I can use my cruise control at 20mph on the Grenadier, our other cars don't have cruise control and so easy to creep up when concentrating on the road and all around you.

I didn't realise you had 10 working distilleries!! we love a good whisky tour, the wife drinks it, it's alcohol after all!!
Not having to constantly stress about speed cameras seems like heaven, the wife now refuses to go to Wales, the North Wales police force are horrendous. there are reports released of the amount of people caught in 20mph areas in north Wales each month, 6,500-7000. it's just not worth the risk, spend our money elsewhere now. I didn’t know about removing the headrests as well until about 10 years ago! But I removed them to see better. Now I know I can use them to escape so I better put them back lol.

Don't forget the Bowmore Hotel - Walked in with four mates on a fishing trip in June 2021 with our masks on. Covid what Covid?!? Bar was three deep and place was jumping like it was 2018. Awesome fun. Cops went by several times but as the owner had let them all underage drink in their youth, it was all very chilled.

Awesome fun. Cops went by several times but as the owner had let them all underage drink in their youth, it was all very chilled.
