Dropped my Gren off this morning for its long awaited software update. it Is also having a number of campaigns carried out. New radiator hose brackets, a re location of some hoses, addition of some additional nuts and bolts to reinforce something on the suspension or steering - can’t remember the exact works and a new transfer case. Mine was an early build, sub 700 vin.

Ive now got the dealers grenadier demo and I was most impressed with the steering. When you’re in your own car you’ve got nowt to compare it with and the demo steering set up lifted the driving experience no end. Zero play, was noticeably crisper turning in and manoeuvring. The dealer said they’d been adjusting the steering geometry on all the ones they’ve had back and that may explain it. It could be that the early ones just weren’t set up correctly. I also noticed that the headlights have a different handshake when locking / unlocking - they now illuminate the amber indicator light as well as the headlights when locking / unlocking. On mine, the headlights alone illuminated. Could be related to the latest software version but has anyone else noticed pre and post changes?

They will have the car all week so fingers crossed that all the niggles get sorted and I get it back with super slick steering ..
Great info! Any chance of finding out the new steering geometry settings?

I can’t say I noticed the lights before but it used to sporadically bing and bong when it was locked but that’s all gone. I now get the headlights followed by the orange lights then on a second press the orange ones then they go out.
That’s the difference post update. The orange lights did show before.

Thanks Tazzieman, I should have been more precise! Was actually wondering whether these settings had been updated in the light of @Ever Pragmatic's recent visit to the dealer...
When the dealer explained what they were doing, they said they‘d enlisted the help of a local wheel and tyre firm. I got the impression that it wasn’t done in the dealer, but on a bit of kit at the mystery firm. As soon as I find out, I’ll spill the beans.

That's info adds to the overall picture... apart from some multifranchise outfits, many of the dealers seem to be smaller operators who subcontract specialist stuff... like wheel alignments.. to trusted local operators. The "old days" of everybody trying to do "everything" are long gone:rolleyes:

Interesting reading about the steering, which has been the source of some debate on this forum - and in the press reviews. With some calling into question the entire design approach, and ready to put it in the bin.

Knee-jerk reactions, perhaps, to what might end up being a steering geometry/ tyre pressure fine-tune required?

Software same. Just some fine-tuning.

100% perfection at launch highly improbable.

Like GPs doing vasectomies and delivering babies in capital cities? Seen that disappear in my lifetime!
I hear having a baby in Cairns is pretty hard right now. No staff. But hey let's build 7 more hospitals when the rest are short staffed!

No new vehicle at launch has or ever will be perfect. For that matter, cars with several generations behind them are still flawed in numerous ways.
This steering thing, will it be rolled out to all the current and pending owners as a general maintenance/adjustment as part of the current stock on offer?

What tyre pressure is the loan car and what were you running? I believe mine was 39 psi on delivery which I lowered I am generally not driving with a heavy load.
I’m running 2.5 bar/36 psi. The loaner was running 3 bar/43psi (fully loaded pressures).

Those parameters look fairly acceptable for a solid front axle but I'm no expert. Maybe the camber allowances are a little high but that may be the best Carraro can do in the manufacturing process.

On my recent test drive I wondered if the adjustment on the steering box/gear has been taken right up to the maximum? It felt like I had almost zero play in the steering wheel. If all other components are tight and new then what else could have been done? Did they ramp up the pump pressure?

When I picked up my car in May my dealer told me that Ineos was working on a software update for the steering doing exactly what you suggested. Changing the pressure for the steering depending on the angle might make a big difference.

Amazing what can be done with software and we're programmed to think it's always a hardware issue. Did a software update come out that helped? When I test drove the vehicle I found the steering to be tight and responsive - it was the return to center that was what threw me a bit and will no doubt scare the hell out of the wife

Thanks for the updates - looking forward to hearing how they adjusted.
Handed back my loaner Gren yesterday and collected my “upgraded and much improved” one in return. Adventure Automotive in Northampton are great fyi.

software done - no more random alarms, beeps or error messages..

rear split doors adjusted as the door open alarm was intermittent.

all door handle seals replaced as the offside rear was sticking.

Passenger Footwell water leak fixed - lagging applied to the a/c pipe was the fix.

New transfer case fitted as well as associated cables and it looks like it runs a bit cooler than the old one. In replacing it they had to remove most of the heat shields which has now cured a slight trim rattle under hard acceleration.

various pipes and hoses moved / new clips added.

They fitted the waterproof under seat stow box which was missing on mine. It’s a nice fit.

Steering and steering geometry adjusted - this is the real improvement as the truck is much more relaxed to steer and the play is minimal.. I’m getting a scanned copy of the works on Monday.

After collecting it, I had to drive up the M1 and then home this morning as it had a proper 150 mile shakedown.. Passed an identical Gren on the way home on the A14 near Kelmarsh c10.45am - only the 2nd one I’ve seen..

in summary, the other non dealer upgrade was to my “gren grin” …

Hi @Ever Pragmatic, thanks for the report.
Do you know which pipe they insulated? Is there perhaps a photo? Thank you.

I’ve not seen the actual fix as it’s now concealed with a trim. I’m not going to remove but I can say that after three hours of driving yesterday and today, theres no drips. That said, it’s brass monkeys so not really condensation weather.

Looks like you have a fantastic dealer. Wish mine was the same.

My experience of them has been excellent from the start. They’ve pointed out that grenadier customers are different to “normal” car buyers. They’re a bmw dealer and they think Ineos buyers are more relaxed, tolerant and accepting that the whole buying process through to fulfilment has been an adventure. They also said that 80% of Gren buyer are cash ones in contrast to 80% using finance for the bmw franchise.

I’m a genuinely pragmatic person which has helped. Shame about your Manchester experience.
