Power steering noise

Hello everyone I was finally able to pick up my grenadier yesterday Unfortunately, I noticed at home that my power steering makes a strange noise. I think it's not a normal noise, or? The filling level in the container was at maximum with the engine warm but switched off. The German instructions do not say exactly in which condition the oil should be checked. Does anyone have an idea? I tried to post a video but I always see the file is too big (7mb)

I have to ask, has anyone tried to eliminate the noise by draining the power steering fluid and then refilling it with proper fluid? Jeep people complain about the whine, drain the pump and put new fluid in. Or is that to easy.

I found this on a Jeep forum. Will attempt tomorrow and report back. Need to dig out my jackstands. I’ve already attempted cranking my wheel back and forth for 15 minutes in my driveway with tires on the ground and engine/pump running which had zero effect.

That noise level is not bad at all, relative to mine. Keep in mind, the dude was inside a garage too, where sound is further reflected and multiplied.. even then, you can barely hear it over the idling engine

This is at least reassuring. If they promptly replace the pump and the sound goes away, I won’t have a bad thing to say about the car.

It would be nice if the dealer actually responded, though. They have been fantastic up until now. 36 hours and no response from a dealer selling me an $87k car feels just a little too casual to me.

I doubt the Ineos car company actually reads this stuff, but this has definitely put a sour taste in my mouth with what I thought was my dream car. I know me talking to a coworker about this has deterred at least one definite sale. This feels dramatic as I type this out while not in the car but with only 200 miles down so far this noise feels like a prison sentence and I’m thinking about how I can reverse this deal or get it sold asap if they refuse to fix it. Mine is that bad.

I’m embarrassed to show it to people, which sucks. “Yeah it’s cool.. but what’s that noise??” With a stank face.

It has to have cost them sales, like I said before, my wife heard it the first time and thought there was something seriously wrong with it. I drive it through Cherry Creek North here (low-rise cityscape) and it just echos off the buildings. Not awe inspiring.

Jeeps ‘whine’ to, I’ve had a JLU 21 &23, and they both did it, but nothing like my IG. THe jeep is lower pitch and lower volume. I have both in a garage I’ll put a kid in each car to move the wheels and get a comparo.

What I don’t get is that this seems to be a AMericas issue? EU/AUS 2023 models don’t do it?

With the view that money drives everything in a for profit company, I'm going to guess that without them being able to pinpoint a defect or a process or a timeline or a part batch causing the issue, they have no idea how many of these will crap out and do this, and accepting this as a warranty item could have unknown detrimental costs. By the time the 5 years is up, this could be half the trucks. That is a horrible noise when selling the car, you're either going to pay up front to replace it, or it's going to come out of the price. I guess which route one takes depends on how good of a haggler one thinks he is.

It's a cheaper fix than a grenaded axle, so, you guy's aren't the most screwed, yet. Unless you drew some really good straws, and have bad diffs, a clunky tcase, and randomized hvac temps, in which you need some guy who's last name ends with a vowel to permanently "borrow" it.

It definitely varies per truck. I had a loaner for a month and it was much quieter than mine. Mine is pretty loud and noticeable if driving with the windows down. People always ask about it if I pull up to them with the truck running. Not a deal breaker, but something that should have been ironed out before release. I often wonder how things like this made it past the initial design and test phase. There is no way the mechanical engineers didn't hear it. And if they did, why would they continue with that spec pump. I personally do not think its faulty, just inherent to that particular pump, so not concerned about early failure. But who knows...

My Aus 2/2023 build MY23 had an audible pump/motor whine for the first 5000km (3000 miles) or so then it settled down. I can still hear it slightly while steering in and out of my enclosed garage but that's expected.
A helpful dealer may be able to advise (and provide a copy) if there is a specific bleeding procedure other than cycling the steering from stop to stop to burp the air through the reservoir.

Same experience here, loud-ish audible whine when on walled roads or underground car parks for first three to six months then it settled down to a more subtle background whine. It was never annoying or easily heard on the open road, but then I believe many ROW owners don't notice it as much as they have diesel engines which have a louder background noise level.

Pretty much, yes. Like many components on these vehicles some break-in time helped.
I recall steering pump/motor noise was a big topic when the US market launched then it seemed to calm down somewhat. Unsure if folks became desensitised or if their steering also became quieter then forgotten about.
