Noise under the car

Hello everyone,

I’m experiencing a deep, heavy noise coming from underneath my car.

The tie rods have been replaced, but that wasn’t the issue (I was certain it wasn’t).

It seems more related to the suspension. It happens mainly at low speeds, particularly when going over speed bumps, often even more when descending them. It sounds like a “clunk, clunk.”
Cant’ really tell if it’s front, middle or rear…

I can also feel it slightly in the steering wheel and pedals.

Soon, I’ll be replacing the tires and springs (Eibach), but I’d like to identify the issue beforehand so no one blames the new springs for the noise, and I can still benefit from the warranty.

Occasionally, the noise also occurs at speeds under 40 km/h in corners when the weight shifts from one side to the other.

I suspect the shock absorbers or those large longitudinal crossbars.

Does someone have or had the same issue?
My Grena is 32000km, and it happened at 7/8000.

Thank you very much

No noises like that in mine.

Suspect one of the following:
  • Exhaust, try to move it by hand and see if it hits something
  • Springs, they may chafe to end fixings, hard to test, possibly traces of chafing.
  • Dampers some time cause noises but this is somewhat unlikely.

Thank you! It’s seems very «mecanical ». 2nde option, springs, speak a lot to me. As if they were floating/moving on there base…

Hard to hear but at 4 seconds there is a double sound , it’s this sound. Listen, like a heart bit…

Interestingly I’m getting the same sound. Had it checked a number of times but nobody seems to be able to identify what it is. Dealer says it’s normal. I’m not convinced.

Not normal at all. Thinking more and more to the springs, but no « proof » at the moment.

I recently replaced my springs (second time). The sound was there before and it’s still there. Checked the seats, they’re fine. New shocks too so it’s not the shocks. Maybe engine mounts? Dealer checked and said they’re fine. Go figure

Maybe check sway bar end links are tight and also the main rubber bushings on the sway bar itself. Sort of sounds like a heavy bar under torsional load to me but very hard to tell. While under there check all front main suspension arms bolts just to be safe. That’s not a normal noise I can assure you something is moving around that shouldn’t be.

It could also be the slip-joint on either driveshaft sticking as the shaft shortens and lengthens as the suspension moves up and down over certain bumps. I’ve heard dry slip-joints produce heavy knocking/thud sounds before especially when slowing down or accelerating from a stop.

When I drive through like a gutter that transitions between the street and my drive way, at speed of let’s say 1-3 mph, I hear this muted thud from the front. Rear axle, by comparison has no such sound
