I hate when people make me spend my money! :) That Helle thing looks amazing, just pre ordered one. How hard was it installing the L track on the sides of the back?
Wasn't difficult to install. You can dial down the length and the height.
Here's their assembly video...

Hi all,

Has anyone installed one of these yet:

I'm quite interested but yet to see or hear about any installs...

Cheers
Hi Miltz

Yes I have recently done it and I am very happy.

One feature of the platform is that has passive tension arms which push down on FR boxes that simply slide underneath. This is very useful for rattling etc.

I have added Bison-Gear side baskets and shelf which helps fully utilize the space.

Take care to buy a drop fridge slide, as the height of the fridge makes it very difficult to access. The Alu-Cab one I bought is fantastic.

Just got an email from Front Runner to say they are now in stock!

I won't go with a drop fridge slide, they take up too much space and are heavy. I have a set of light weight folding steps I'll use if needed, my wife who's quite a bit shorter than myself currently uses them when she's trying to find things buried at the bottom of the fridge but I haven't had any issues with height than an extra foot might...

Hey Carl, is there room to fit a drawer fridge below the shelf? The Engel or Dometic drawer fridges are a 9.8 inches tall. Is there enough room ? Can't find dimensions for floor to bottom of extrusion. Thanks!!

Sorry, I realized I didnt answer your question. The Grenadier USA L tracks were easy to install. Just remove the OEM loops, replace screws, add the spacers and you're golden. The latter have grooves to accommodate the anti-rotation tabs of the OEM loops.

I find it interesting how exactingly specific they were in noting the measurements of their extrusions in the assembly instructions. It's certainly a nice head start for anyone looking to DIY and order pre-cut extrusions.

Head over to TNUTZ and order your extrusions pre-cut and your corners/hardware and then do it for half the price. :D

For further info, the fridge slide I'm looking at is the Dometic/Frontrunner item for the CFX3 55IM (already have the fridge).

The platform depth of the storage system is long enough for this (25mm longer than the slide assembly). My idea was that I'd mount the slide to the storage system using the T-slot on the left and rear (front when at the back of the vehicle) which would give 30mm clearance at the front (rear of the slide) to clear the angled back seat.

With the slide being designed for the Dometic CFX3 55 there is 4 mounting points for the fridge in the slide (though the bottom) so you don't have to use straps through the handles to tie the fridge to the slide, though I'd like to use them as well given the corrugations I often drive on, worst case I may have to remove the rear handle to clear the seat and only use the front handle to put straps thorugh for additional security.
Quick update!

Have assembled the platform and placed it in the car, but not installed it as I didn't have the required T## bit to remove the factory bolts into the floor, will be off to find the required bit tomorrow so I can complete the install.

Couple of things to note, the instructions are a bit vague in places, you end up having to look at the overall exploded diagrams more than the individual steps to see what goes where in some parts. And the feet that attach to the floor at the rear of the vehicle had to swap sides once I got it in, they're angled, on the instructions it showed them angled towards the front but once I had the unit in the car found they had to be angled the other way which meant swapping sides for the 2 pieces, not an issue as I had to take it out anyway to get on with mounting up the slide.

And while there is a opening in the left infill panel (it's 2 parts) to access the 12V outlet, not all 12v plugs will fit it, my Dometic fridge plug is quite long as it's a standard 12V plug/inline fuse/2 pin plug (not fused) all in one. Was thinking I may have had to cut the standard plug off, fit a basic 12V plug then an inline fuse after a short length of cable to fir but then found some 90 degree adaptors online so will give one of them a go.

As for the slide, while the Dometic/Front Runner 55L slide will fit on the platform front to rear, once the fridge is on the slide I found that I had to move the slide towards the rear by about 50mm to prevent the fridge from hitting the top of the back seats. Fortunately every thing was trial fitted before drilling holes in the platform to secure the slide. And even though the slide overhangs the rear of the platform slightly it does still clear the cargo does fine and was able to use 9 of the 10 fixing locations, which the instructions suggest using a minimum of 6 or.

I have also removed the front facing handle from the fridge to prevent contact with the back seat, though I may be able to get it back on once everything is in place, this was so I could use the fridge to slide direct mounting option which centralises the fridge over the slide. Could have probably kept the handle on if the fridge was pushed as far to the rear as possible on the slide and straps were used to secure it.

This does have me wondering though, can I move my station wagon rear seats forward? I'm aware the unity wagon has its rear seats sitting a little further forward than the station wagon for compliance reasons, and that they can be moved back into the stations wagon's position if desired however doing so could cause compliance issues if checked. I'm not sure how much difference there is between seat locations but this may allow me to move the slide to where I would prefer it, more for cosmetic reasons than anything.

Will upload some photos once I've completed the install.

Further update, not sure what made me think to look but the tool kit that comes with the car has the required bit, and a quick look over the car seems to suggest it's probably the most common fitting used for structural interior/interior trim and panels...

Great write up so far. I bought and installed my system without having reading this. Instructions are a bit vague but no worse than some of the ikea stuff I’ve built. Grew up with mecano sets so maybe that helped. I went to Bunnings (local hardware store) and purchased six triangular brackets. About 150mm on each side. Put four of these these on the back section to brace. Also put two triangle braces facing forward from the legs at the door and also an L bracket on each door leg. Feels much sturdier. Only issue is the little 6mm nut holding the foot bracket. Don’t rate its chances of holding the legs down in an impact.

Now to build a fridge box and quick mount using the T track on the top and a few 6mm bolts.

It is a good system. A little flawed. May copy it and build a version from stronger 8020.

All in now, one thing I'd change other than moving the rear seats into the utility position (if possible) so I can move the slide back and retain the rear handle (fridge is bolted to the slide so straps through the handles not needed, though I have just put straps through the rear handle for added security), is moving the slide to the other side of the car...

The cargo door locks/pins at the roof limit how far the fridge lid can open, if the fridge was on the other side and the lid opened the other way (which it did until today), it would have an extra 2-3" of opening. As it is, it only just opens enough for my liking. I'll run it as it is for now but will probably end up moving things around.

Moving it over would require an extension cable for the fridge power, or a new power outlet installed which should be easy enough given the battery system is under the rear seat. Would also rule out using the cargo door fold down table while the fridge is out but that is somewhat negated by the slide having its own inbuilt table.

Fridge height is about the same as tray back/canopy ute set up, so relatively tall, whether this bothers you is up to the person, my 5'2" wife is OK with it (not not for cleaning, but she reckons she can stand on the rear bumper for that), she'll just need her folding step more often when digging deeper vs when the fridge was tied down to the cargo area floor as it had been so far.

Overall pretty happy, sturdier than I thought it would be looking at the pictures and how it was before being bolted in and everything tightened, and looks quite neat.

I like the simplicity of this vs some of the drawer systems, depending on one's needs of course.

Q: Jack access? I guess you just have to work around that back left leg if you leave it in the stock location?

I was just happy with the price and easy install, not yet 100% sure what I'm going to do in the back (even back seats) long term so this is a good solution for now, just want to swap sides for the fridge.

As for the jack, you could get the access panels off if you removed the rear left infill panel but I wasn't too interested in that, I've taken the jack out and put it in the box I'm keeping my recovery gear in. Might be able to find another use for that space that doesn't require quick access.
