It’s all to do with Homologation - the same vehicle for the whole world. Many of their Worldwide markets have a 3.5T GVM restriction on a standard drivers license, which means the payloads are restricted not by engineering capability, but by an arbitrary figure. The solid weight of the Gren counts against it here.
Same thing happens here in the UK with the "mini trucks" like the Fuso Canter and Isuzu Grafter (Nqr).

They end up having less payload than things like ford transit tippers or Renault master vans in 3.5t form, even though they're the same running gear as their 7.5t cousins.

3.5 ton is picked because in metric its a round number. This results in weaker vehicles carrying more than they realistically should, and stronger, tougher trucks carrying less. GVM should be based on the kerb Weight plus what the vehicle can safely carry. The Grenadier truck in stock form would be good for 4ton I guarantee.... put that on an L200(triton) and see what happens!

Must be room up under there for an auxiliary fuel tank
Well there's definitely room for an additional filter...

Disagree with you there mate. Since getting mine in May, the grenadier has been primary tow vehicle for work. Its got so many features that rivals don't (even pickups), that give it the edge.

Amarok doesn't have low range which excluded it from my shortlist a long time ago, which is a shame as I think they're very well built trucks. They also have a tall reverse gear for some reason.

The Gren on the other hand has a low box that can be engaged with the centre diff unlocked. PERFECT.

The back is cavernous for a wagon, it's got no poncey leather in the storage area to be ruined. The split rear door set up is ace for loading the back even with a trailer on. I could go on but even though its expensive, I guarantee a better working SUV you won't find.

The pickup suffers from it's kerb weight. It's built way tougher than the normal double cabs on the market, but is still limited to 3.5 ton which is a number plucked out of thin air. Thing could run at 4 ton no bother. The influx of electric trucks will test this 3.5ton ceiling as few of them Will have a curb weight of under 3 ton without being made of cardboard.
Ive no doubt at all its not capable but the weights issue and price mean its sadly destined to head that way.
The fact that its teamed up with belstaff for instance and not say Stihl etc should give a hint of where its at.

RE Amarok Ive run them for nigh on 10 years, in forestry and towing never missed the low range...for the record,

Bitterwseet discussion as i really wanted this truck ...like i said still following it but its a gutting feeling.
Apologies if i m now coming over as a detractor but ive followed it from Day 1 and genuinly pissed off with IA that that they've spectacularly killed off a huge potential UK market sector. (I know of a company that's cancelled orders and gone for 5 hiluxes be-grudgingly)

and now i have to watch you lot enjoying yourselves 😫😫

Greatly appreciated. Can I ask a favor? Can you just share the bed dimension image? I’m staying in a place with a glacially slow internet connection and zero cell service. My DL speeds are sub 10 mbps and that huge zip file will take forever.

If not, no worries.

I downloaded it on my main pc this morning, on a separate tablet right now so don't have access to the details.

If nobody else steps forward, then I'll retrieve it tomorrow. 👍

Hot take: price and payload aside, it’s just not a good looking truck. But I also don’t like the Gladiator, so what do I know? Converting a SUV into a truck doesn’t work. Someone prove me wrong.

There's no right or wrong to prove, just personal opinions. Looks are in the eye of the beholder.

The Grenadier isn't an SUV and the Quartermaster isn't a truck so not surprised if it doesn't work

I wouldn't bet on this, as Belstaff is still not generating profit.

AWo
Rather depends on how you look at it.

It's generating gross profit ~ £8.7 million in last published accounts, and £7.4 million the year before; and the majority of the other expenses relate to servicing a eye-watering large historical debt that's now a series of Ineos loans paying in part 7%.

I think the Belstaff/Grenadier relationship generates positive output for both brands and probably is more than double the bang for each £ spent.
