I have tried a 20L canister inside the car. It is very loud when it is shaked up. Annoying over time. Having it outside of the rear door is an alternative. The faucet is quick and easy to use. No pump and hoses needed. Simple. My preferred solution for non drinking water.

I thought about it too but I don't think it's a good idea with the offroad stress
I agree. In my area you are lucky to keep nice paint on the side of your vehicle. So nothing protruding and no cantilever weight added.

The Dometic 10L water jugs have finally replaced my 25yo NATO water jugs. They are really nice to pack and the USB-chargeable faucet is very convenient.

Yes, i usually put some aquarium sponge inside to prevent noise.

I bought a vaast tank with a mount and tap with hose. Very simple. It didn't work that well the way i had it flat along the roof bar. It would be better mounted on its long edge. I have seen people mount it inside the car alongside a fridge frame. I ran out of room.
There is this system, mounted on the outside of the car along the window, using a window mounting frame.

It's a great solution. My wife loves it!

Ah never heard of that trick. How big is the sponge? Tell us more.
I haven't put it in the 1gal rotopax tank yet because it's small and not as annoying as the larger tanks.

on the land where I had a 15lt tank instead I had put inside a large piece of sponge for aquarium filter a little bigger than the tank itself so as not to make the water hit the internal walls.
the sponge for aquarium filter is generally found on the market in 100cmx100cmx20cm h format. then with a cutter you just have to cut it and calmly pass it through the nozzle.
the idea came to me thinking of rally cars that insert a sponge on the petrol tank to avoid the banging.

attached you see a failed test done with a normal canister before taking the rotopax. the blue shadow inside is the sponge.
