Update on making your own soft shackles.
The latest soft shackle I’ve just completed is made with 10mm dyneema. I used 2.5m for one shackle 😳. .4-.5m is wastage but you neeed this extra length to make and work the diamond knot. I tried various prototypes including one with the “new improved stopper knot” which is called the big overhand knot , which is apparently even stronger as the two end are formed into a loops and the whole shackle threaded through itself. The downside is that the stopper knot is huge when using 10mm dyneema and 3m is required for one shackle.
one picture shows the shackle before working ends cut off and the other the finished article. A point to note is that dyneema doesn’t melt well when trying to seal the ends as mdpe rope does. In the end I used fire rope glue from our wood burning stoves. Similar to super glue I guess.
A satisfying project with more to make in different styles and stopper knots. Some of the stopper knots take some mastering 🤔View attachment 7799821View attachment 7799822
always keen to see some rope work 👍💪

Prototypes all done. This is now the final production version of my soft shackles. !
To allow for working of the knot I used 2.5m of 10mm dyneema. A button knot with ends buried into the main body of the shackle. A very difficult knot to master but the most aesthetically pleasing and apparently one of the strongest.
Just waiting the Grenadier to go with the soft shackles 😎
Its a bit like having some bicycle clips but not owning a bicycle 😂😂

Very nice! (y)

That looks like a tedious job.

I see you and your wife in front of the tv, she is crocheting tablecloths and you are making soft shackels. :)
What to do on long dark winter nights ? We are miles from anywhere and no pub in sight. Good job or I would be in there 🍺

What safety factor are you going to apply to them?

Arrived today, 2 soft shackles, 7000 kg, purchased from “Grube” for EUR 21.50 each, www.grube.deView attachment 7800212
They seem very small 100mm. I’d be interested to see them connect up to the two ends of a tree protector sling onto a winch line. Not much room to manoeuvre the shackle open when connected to slings.
I take it that 7000kg is safe working load with good quality 10mm dyneema 🤔
Hope they’re OK for you 👍🏼

Small but not that expensive. I will try it at some point.

That’s good. I see red winch 10mm soft slings are £70. Undoubtably good quality though.

Ich habe es mit meiner eigentlichen Ausrüstung ausprobiert. Ich habe im Moment keine Winde. Grand Cherokee.

Good spot. 👍🏼That must be pretty poor quality material if the break load is 7000kg for shackle made with 10mm rope !
I see the red winch 10mm soft shackle has a minimum breaking strain of 16825 kg .

I don't know what I'm missing, but the label of Barney's soft shackle says 7000 daN which is well 7000 Kg.

Is there anything wrong with that?

Nothing wrong. It’s probably quite adequate. However compared to other soft shackles on the market using 10mm dyneema , the breaking strain is low. If however you were using it to connect the snatch block or snatch ring to the anchor point on a double line pull, then the breaking strain may be too low when using a 5.5 tonne winch. Maybe you could consider it a purposeful weak link in the system to save breaking the winch rope.
in most situations it will be fine as long as you are fully aware of its breaking strain when setting up you rigging 👍🏼
