I have a steep driveway. If I park on the driveway and try to start I'm left feeling like an idiot. My last truck was a manual 1984 fj60 so obviously I had none of these issues. The issues:

I put it in drive and it rolls back slightly with a caution message to secure vehicle from rolling, truck puts itself in park.

Same thing when I use the parking brake method. Switches itself to park. I really detest all these modern "conveniences".

Only way I've got it to actually work is 2 foot driving, so holding foot brake and gas and basically using it like a clutch. Is this seriously the way to do this?
I feel ridiculous asking this and having any neighbor watch this show, but please help lol

Been there, done that. Two-foot driving is so ingrained in me that I never considered it a downside. I was mildly surprised the first time it happened, though.

I can't think of the last time I started off on a steep hill in an automatic without two foot driving to prevent it from moving

Two issues, with the message "secure the vehicle from rolling" and going into park means the drivers door isn't shut fully. Second, to engage hill start assist to hold the vehicle press the foot brake hard before releasing the handbrake, the vehicle will then hold.

Door not shut is probably valid, this was An amazingly helpful post thank you!

Does this only happen on your drive after turning the car over?
Just curious if you get this while warmed up in traffic?

On the drive matter, would selecting reverse and rolling back an inch then selecting drive create the same issue. Obviously two foot action is easier - again just curious.

It's just me trying to start on my driveway and drive up it. Reverse doesn't help, warming up has nothing to do with it.
Coming from a 1984 manual transmission, I had no idea on these things and I must have looked real ridiculous trying to drive up my driveway for nearly 10 minutes haha. The 2 foot driving definitely solves the problem I just wanted to make sure that was the "right" answer

Funny i did not go into park but i noticed that on my drive home from pickup that at a stoplight it rolled back before i put the gas. Maybe i did it push the brake hard enough.

Have to get use to the lack of all the luxuries. Can’t wait to get dirty.
