Hi all. Wondering if anyone has used an extractor to perform an oil change on the Grenadier. ? Any issues?
For other vehicles, it is so you don't need to get under them or lay on the ground... I use this method on our Sprinter (and in the past a few other vehicles where the filter was on top)Why would you do that?
I understand the need and desire for vehicles that don't have the insanely easy access to the drain plug (as easy as on old Land Rovers), but not for the Grenadier. For other vehicles, it is so you don't need to get under them or lay on the ground... I don't know - I didn't spill a drop of oil dumping it from the pan. When I get handier with the filter removal, even that won't be a problem. It's far less messy too.
Definitely less messy... I've gotten pretty good at lining up a drain pan after years of doing it, but just letting the extractor suck it all out is much easierIt's far less messy too.
Interesting - I always thought those systems used the dipstick opening. Might be worth poking around BMW or Supra forums since they use the B58 as well. For my Range Rover, the oil can be extracted via inserting the tube in oil fill well after removing the oil filler cap (this vehicle does not have a dip stick either). As mentioned in other responses, extraction is a common method used on Mercedes and other vehicles and tends to extract the same or more oil. I was just wondering if anyone had tried this yet on the Grenadier and if there were any issues (especially if not all of the oil can be extracted).
The drain plus is not magnetic.I am a bit old school and prefer a dip stick for measurement and to drain the oil out the drain plug. Oil level sensors can fail, a dip stick, well not so much. Draining oil out the drain plug will help remove any built up sediment and sludge. The shallow pan in the front and well in the rear is going to concentrate any of that sludge right near the oil level sensor. Having said that, with the synthetic oil most drivers are not going to see a lot of build up especially if they are driving in benign environments. I think most designs are a product of the times where 99% of drivers don’t even know how to check their oil levels let alone crawl under their cars to change the oil.
I am not anywhere close to my first oil change does anyone know if the drain plug is fitted with a magnet? If not is there an aftermarket plug / magnet out there?
