It's easy.
  • gear lever is right hand side
  • gears order as labeled in the picture
  • step on the idle finder to directly switch to idle
  • kickstarter and gear lever have the same fulcrum

Decompression: of course you need one. 515 cc, one cylinder, this would take a heavy and audacious man to operate the kickstarter without a decompression. ;)

But it's an auto-mechanic system. There is an automatic decompression mechanism inside the motor which is operated by a small centrifugal governor. At very low revs (i.e. kickstarting) it opens the exhaust valve a bit and closes at sufficient revs.

Did they do any re-engineering to the gearbox, out of the box the RE units are quite notchy, four gears and at least three neutrals. Hitchcock motorcycles are a RE tuner/ parts supplier. They make a lovely billet machined gearbox replacement, only 4000 euro.

They didn't, it's a one to one original RE gearbox. And yes, you need to get used to it.

And I know Hitchcock (of course). And the prices as well. ;)

When it's cold, it sounds like a Lanz Bulldog.

After a few minutes, the sound gets a bit softer, but it's still a bit like a one cylinder tractor from the 50s. Barney will for sure hear it sooner or later.

The examples below give an approximate idea of the sound. However, in real life you feel the shock waves and the vibrations in your feet - which are of course missing here. So the sound experience is better in real life. In the first video, you see it moving backwards and painting two lines on the pavement - due to vibrations.

The models in the videos are old and new frame variants, but same engine and exhaust. Mine is a bit modified, exhaust pointing slightly upwards at the back, handlebar etc.):

Love the collection, I had that exact same monkey, till I sold it to a friend who just completed a ride in both summer and winter extreme weather conditions from dubai to Norway.
On the monkey? 😳

Just sold the DR650 as I seldom rode it. Thought it would be “good for everything” bike, but it was a “not quite good at anything bike”. I favor the Ural.
