Hand Grab for RHD vehicles

I may be missing something...so there's an airbag and a grab handle on the LHS in a RHD vehicle ? so presumably an airbag plus grab handle in the RHS pillar for a LHD version
So am wondering what's preventing installation of grab handles on both sides other than saving $$
I do not believe there are any airbags in the the A pillars whatsoever.

Possibly smaller or different size airbags for RHD and LHD

what is the little tab for, trim removal or airbag related?

what happens to the trim if that blows?

blows away like any part in front an airbag.

According to the diagram @DCPU posted there are not airbags in the pillars. However, I have no clue what’s underneath that white wrap-it could very well be an airbag
Curtain airbags run across the top of the windows and part way down the front pillars. see no. 4 in the diagram above. It lines up with that photo above with the trim off.

Gotcha. I didn’t notice that at all. Thanks.

Here's a link from similar thread showing both airbags. Nothing obvious sticks out as to why a handle could not be installed either side as on the surface they look identical and after all, the curtain airbags are relatively small. I suspect the handles will not interfere.. could be completely wrong of course. 😶 :)

I can't comment on other parts of the world, but here in Australia they can be pretty particular about anything that even partially obscures the driver's field of vision that isn't part of the vehicle's approved design (dashcams, satnavs, even fishing rod holders on bullbars). The grab handle on the passenger's side is mounted on the inside facing part of the A pillar and sticks out a bit across the edge of the windscreen. So if a vehicle is complianced without a grab handle on the driver's A pillar, adding one could technically make the vehicle unroadworthy.

Agree but the passenger grab handle drops very sharply back/away from the A pillar.

Sitting in the passenger seat I don't recall even noticing it whilst looking through the windscreen - maybe current owners could comment.

It would be interesting to attach one to the drivers side to see if it did indeed impinge on the right edge of the drivers side windscreen and if it does maybe it is only a tiny amount.

There must be about 1 million cars on Australian roads with mobile phone holders attached to the A pillar much further

My photos of one of the PT vehicles at our last test drive show the passenger side handle clearly visible through the windscreen from the outside, so it does take up some of the forward corner view from the seat. It's possible Ineos could have designed a handle that sat more in line with the A pillar, but then I guess it would have stuck out into the door opening too far.

As for mobile phone holders etc, there are occasional reports in various motoring forums of police in some states having blitzes on these types of accessories and issuing tickets. One of the things they also look for when pulling over hotted-up cars is those additional engine gauges people mount to the A pillars. If they can't defect a souped-up rice rocket for anything mechanical then they start nit-picking things like this.
