Its an interesting conversation here Dave, as to where the IG fits against its competition - particularly here in Australia against the Landruiser 300 series - (not the 70 series). In Australia, the Landcruiser 300 Series is what most people would think is the pinnacle of touring/offroad vehicles. (This info was for our non OZ readers)

At its base configuration ( Cloth Seats, 5 Seats etc etc), the IG sits next to the L300 GX (lowest specified LC300) with comparable specifications to each other. The pricing for the IG is $90,000AUD driveaway, the LC300 is just about $99,500AUD - a considerable difference, but not a huge price difference

However if you decided to get the Fieldmaster Edition, and add the Rough Pack, now you seriously have an IG that compares on spec level with the LC300 GRSPORT - which is the LC300 top of the line"offroad" model. You are now comparing serious vehicles that both have Leather, Sunroof, 5 Seats, 3 Lockers etc.
However the price difference is now huge - with the IG being around the $104,600AUD driveaway, however the LC300 GRSPORT is around the $152,000AUD driveaway.

Now sure, the LC300 has a few more niceties here and there, but the IG also has some further benefits that the GRSPORT doesn't have as well - give some options, take some options here and there I reckon.

So to me, a slightly specked up IG can easily become a high level 4x4 vehicle, at a bargain price compared with some of the options available on the market - if the right options boxes are ticked.

The GRSPORT is the far and away the best looking LC300, however it is not an IG in the looks department.

Google Definition of Utilitarian

"designed to be useful or practical rather than attractive"

Based on this, I do not think we can call the Grenadier "Utilitarian" - as the IG looks HOT AS HELL

Ineos have a range of ways of describing what the Grenadier is:

In one of the interviews with Sir Jim, he used 3 words/phrases:

I think the truth is, it's whatever you want it to be. It's just a starting point. And that's entirely consistent with Projekt Grenadier.

To some there is a clear attractiveness in the engineering input designed to create the useful or practical solution.

Hence, exposed rivet heads, fins on an air cooled cylinder head, cross drilled and lock wired bolts, Dzus fasteners...

Ugliness is not a precondition to be a utilitarian.
So attractiveness doesn't make a utilitarian less a utilitarian, I think.

I think there is a bit of overanalysis going on. Probably a symptom of the lack of actual vehicle in shed.
I want the Grenadier like a pair of walking boots. I couldn't care what it looks like , just is it tough enough to get the job done year in year out without failing. I don't need contrast lacing , built in GPS and other niceties.
Oh and it must be able to get me to the remote tracks where I start my walks from.
Simples!

See I want it to be walking boots, working boots, driving shoes, dress shoes and bare feet.
Definitely not riding boots, slippers or Chelsea boots.
But if someone else wants these things.
Ok with me.

I'll be using my Grenadier to ferry around my pack of large dogs, Pull a caravan and other utilitarian domestic tasks. I live in the countryside and the roads are treacherous in Winter. Could I do this with a large non 4x4 SUV? Sure. Will I be doing a lot of off road driving? Probably not but would like to do some training and explore this side of the vehicle. I like the analog rugged design of this vehicle and loved my test drive in it. So I will hopefully be in one real soon.

In my field of expertise it always amazes and thrills me what people accomplish with their personal computers. Gaming, programming, graphic design, writing, music, CNC, hell - just making their PC look amazing.

I for one am looking forward to seeing how EVERYONE will be using their Grenadier - from farming to fashion!!

Agree with you there mate.

This is going to replace my 22 year old defender daily drive with something a bit more comfortable.

The cook is going to spit it when I tell her carpets are gone🤦‍♂️

She is going to be ok with you referring to her as "the cook"?
