I have never needed to do this. Nor have I a briar pipe.
But those in cold climes can thank me for this analog survival tip!

I used to carry a box of matches to heat up the key.

When I was in high school I had a Ford Escort hatchback (USA) with sketchy locks on cold days. Thankfully I was young and fit because there were many mornings where I had to crawl through the hatch to get into my car. This was made all the more challenging because the pistons that held the hatch open were no good.

When I lived n Exeter Tasmania many years ago I used to throw a bucket of cold water over the windscreen every morning in winter to get the ice off the windscreen.
my aunt worked in a hospital for years. She used warm water from big thermo bottles to defrost the windscreen after the night shifts.
One morning she grabbed the cold red tea instead of the warm water....


(yes I know that warm water might crack the glass)

With a bucket of hot water poured over it, the sight would immediately have been as if there were no glass at all.
