Bigger tyres > 255/85r17

I've just done a test fit with Mickey Thompson (MT) Baja Boss AT tyres in 255/85r17

The MT website states the tyre diameter is 879mm (34.606 inches). MT tyres run big with the calculated size of a 255/85r17 being 865.3mm

Of interest MT quotes a true 35x12.5 at 876mm (34.488 inches) so these 255/85s are just 3mm bigger than a true 35 (basically would be a 35x10.5)

The tyres sit inside the guards and do not scrub anything lock to lock. Not sure how it would work flexed up though. Fitters opinion is it will hit bumb stops before guards, but I'm not sure, I'd like to test that one.

Opening the rear door misses by millimetres. Probably 3-5mm. It is so close on the back door, I am wondering if there is any play in the bracket to pick up a few mm and save $800 ish incl postage on the black sheep wheel mount.

A true to size tyre like this would be perfect I imagine, but it does appear only MT are doing these.

This tyre and size appears to be popular in US FJ market and maybe some jeep, but there must be some demand in Aus for them to be available here. Hopefully will stay that way

I am still waiting on the Eibach lifted springs and new rims to turn up, which I think should all work nicely together, if I can just get the spare to work.

Yeah I mentioned a while ago I’d be happy to run 255/80/17’s in lieu of 285/70/17’s as both are 33”.

The problem in Australia is it isn’t a popular size with very limited options, particularly in AT’s. As such trying to get one if you need it out west would be a tough ask, and you’d potentially have to get one shipped in, whereas 285/70/17’s would be everywhere.

What are the key benefits you see of changing to the 35" tryres?

I know it is an issue with uncommon sizes, but I also think its a rare one. I feel the reward outways the risk

Feel like this is a loaded question, but I will answered it honestly. 35's arent the benefit persay, they are an arbitrary tyre size that we can get away with.

The benefits come in the taller tyres used with an increased ground clearance and greater side wall. Taller tyres when aired down allow a greater contact patch, they allow more tread to wrap over rocks and float on sand. They provide greater "cushioning" on rough roads and corrugations.

many thanks - I appreciate that (nothing loaded!) and will do further research.

at this stage my inclination is to stick with what the car came with and see if that meets my requirements over the coming 12-18 months and if not, then change up.

In the US we refer to the 255/80s (and their 255/85/16 counterparts) as the pizza cutters. Very common among 3rd/4th/5th gen 4Runners and their Tacoma counterparts. I've run them for years and plan to on the Grenadier as well. They are just a hair taller than the traditional 285/70/17s, but, as I'm sure is true with the 255/85/17(in comparison with a 285/75/17 or 305/70/17), they will fit with much less work due to their narrower tread width. They are also available in ATs (Falken Wildpeak A/T3W's are my go-to)

Yeah 35’s in your case not 33’s I get that. I was looking at 255-80-17’s in lieu of 285-70-17’s for the same reasons you probably were.
My point was that they are as rare as rockinghorse shyte in Australia, so you leave yourself open to not being able to get them in need. A quick search of a few dealers would suggest the Micky T’s are the only ones available here.
But if you love em, hook in.

@anand i just checked, we dont get the wildpeaks in that size here. 255/80s are basically a 33. Will be no problem fitting them like the 285/70s that I have seen others run, as for the 285/75 has also been used

I have tried a 295/70 (trying to get at least 34" tall) and it works with out a problem. Even on the back door. But Ibwould prefer to not be so wide. The 255/85 is just that bit taller and just fowls the rear door. But they do fit the on the car with out any other modification need

You also mention you’re waiting on springs and rims ? Keen to know what rims you’ve chosen, and are the Eibach springs already available for purchase ?

Somewhere between $585 and $610 each. Look to be a bit more expensive than the Kenda, but I think I prefer them

hello, did you tested the 34 inch offroad now? i have the same idea with 255/85/17 . but i am absolutly not sure about the eibach springs. there are only springs no new shocks. can this be good?

Eibach manufactures the factory springs, I'm moderately confident that if they say it works well with the factory shocks, it will work well

After investigating the 255/85s (these are 35x10s) there is legality issues in Australia.

The actual measurements of 255/85r17s is 879mm which is greater than 7% in diameter over the largest 255/17r18 wheel (814mm) fit to the vehicle.

This means engineering certification is required, and because the vehicle has esc, the cost is north of 25k to get this. Not worth it.

So 285/75r17s it is (34s) which fit the the car, and fit the door. Only problem is not a lot of choice in this size.

Yeah a few MT's Dave but not much in the AT spec. And @K1LL3M is looking for 35's not 33/34's.

Those HD Terrains look interesting I haven't seen them before.
They might be a good idea as a second set to put on when doing way outback trips?
