I purposely test drove a non sunroof model on the PTO tour and purchased a non-sunroof SW. I did’t want a direct path for sun and heat, or a leak-prone 1970’s design.
I had a 95 model (series 1 US spec) Discovery for nearly 13 years, the twin sun-roofs leaked all the time. still went for these though.

Typically I am not a sunroof kind of person but I have enjoyed it on my Landcruiser. I do also like the fact that I can block out all of the sun when I want to though. That is what concerns me about the IG Safari windows. On a hot day in Nashville, I do not want the sun beating down on me. They look great but not sure I want to live with them. Also reading here about leaks which is a big negative. Anyone have strong feelings either way? I could go either way at this point. Thanks.
Get the sky light windows. You will regret it later if you pass on this.

I have never really enjoyed a sunroof but the IG safari windows were a must for me. It truly makes the cabin feel wide open and lit. I live in charlotte and drove it all summer and did not feel any additional heat issues. I am also “follicly challenged” so i was worried about getting sunburned without a hat. It was never an issue. Hope this helps.

I was initially against safari windows when looking at Grenadier’s but after a few test drives in models with and without I opted to get them. Concerns about leaks was first and foremost in my mind but so far I’ve had no issues with mine at all. It’s a somewhat unique design feature of the Grenadier and adds to the nostalgia of the vehicle for sure. Tints of various levels are easy enough get hold of to deal with bright sun and UV, likewise for fabric or insulated inserts.

Easy to imaging yourself looking like David Attenborough all decked out in Khaki’s filming wildlife in some far flung region of the world with your head popped out one of the panels. Sentimental imagery I know but all part of the fun I guess.

I love the idea of a sunroof, but go out of my way to avoid buying vehicles with them. Eventually they all leak. That reality combined with critical electrical hardware mere inches from the safari windows made it a no go for me.

I honestly didn’t know they sold the series 1 Disco in the US!

We have one too, a bit newer (96) with twin leaky sunroofs 🙄

For me a no for sure, it adds weight where you don't want it, less insulation, direct sun light glare when the sun is above, never as structurally sound compared to no sunroof, then you have leeks to contend with, it affects roof rack size, and on top of that it costs more.

But they do look cool.

The glass half empty view.
For me this pretty much sums it up. I get enough Baja sun without them.

Thumbs up to the safari windows from me. I live in an extremely rainy city and those windows 1) haven’t leaked (so far! 6 months & 8,000 km), 2) give me daylight on dark days, and 3) allow for some much-needed storage space with Black Sheep molle shelves up there. (Pics here on forum.)

I love convertibles, but have never really been a fan of sunroofs. Having said that, I ordered with the safari windows and can't imagine it without them. I hope they don't leak, but they probably will at some point. I'll worry about that then.

Kinda like passing up steak and red wine for a rice cake and a kale smoothie; I understand your decision, but we'll never be good friends. ;)

Definite yes. Mine leaked but the dealer fixed it. I had them tinted and ceramic coated. They were way too bright from the factory.

Great responses so far. Moreso in favor of the safari windows. I will go test drive a couple, with and without, back to back, to get a better feel. Thanks for all of the feedback. Much appreciated.

I like them in concept but I have never owned a vehicle that has them that they didn't end up leaking at some point. VW, Land Rover, Honda all ended up leaking after a time. I also don't like the added heat they produce. They look cool but not cool enough to justify the down the road headaches.

Another yes vote. I like the extra headroom. The Grenadier already feels open and expansive, the Safari windows just add to that feeling. They frame the control switches in a way that seems right. For me, no problems with leaking in rain or snow. Have not felt the need for covers from sun at this point, but nice to have that option.

As far as being actual Safari windows - standing on the seat and taking pictures -
I’d have to loose a few pounds and take up yoga before being able to give a review.

I've accidentally left mine open during heavy rain showers on a couple of occasions and the interior remained dry.

Yes - A must have. Opens up the whole cabin.

+1 YES
I was on the fence when selecting options on my build. I’ve had no less than 6 (can’t remember them all) vehicles with sun/moon roofs and most have had a leak at some point. With that as my experience, I was leaning toward not adding them to my build. In the end my wife asked me, “If money wasn’t part of the equation, would you want them?” My answer was yes so we ordered them.

We’re both so happy we did! They make it so much brighter inside and I have not felt excessive heat or cold from them. We bought in July so I’ve had it in over 90F and below 30F temps. I’m about 30-min outside Seattle, so very gray and wet. No leaks for me. I also have the factory tint but nothing else.

As others have said, if I were to do it again, I would pick them a second time.

Good luck with your purchase, and enjoy the ride!

I like them. It makes the truck feel more airy, and gives you more headroom, I think. I haven't had any issues with rain leaks and, in the very rare instances of too much sun, I have a couple of sun screens.
