I guess I can see why people compare the IG with the JLU, but is it really the best comparison? I think the real competitor was the last generation LandCrusier here in the US, not the new one. So that isn’t really valid anymore. Really, why not look at a comparo at price point for Jeep- one of those Wagoneer models. That gives you similar price point and probably closer in final design- at least fixed roof. Maybe the IG is in between the JLU and the wagoneer model. I’ve had Grand Cheerokees a decade ago and maybe those would have been closer- but frankly Jeep, to me, lost its way outside of the Wranglers. The 4Runner walked away from the JGC, or really the other way around since the 4Runner didn’t change.
Maybe my thoughts on real comparo is not right- I don’t really know that much about them, outside of that the one on the showroom floor was over $100k.
I had/have a JLU 21 and now a 23. It is the Sahara, it’s for the kids. I think the Sahara is closer in some ways than the Rubicon. I guess it is what you want to do with it and what you want to ‘say’. The Jeeps are great at turning them into trail gremlins- but to me that is the activity FOR them, the IG is about GETTING to the activity. More of the expedition/overlander concept.
I have (son) a 23 4Runner. That to me is more IG than the Jeeps. Talk about a different concept on head room and view outside. Plus, yes it’s a Toyota, but damn, that thing is tinny. The doors feel wimpy- and that 5speed….damn, that thing feels slow. And you can’t get close to the IG by throwing money at it.
The IG is just, different.
I still think it competes with the last year of the V8 LandCrusier more than anything. There is no ‘better’ version of it out there now- especially if you want to tickle your 1993 NAS 110 itch.
If jeep had come out with the Grenny, but wrapped in a Grand Wagoneer circa 80-90, they wouldn’t have the sales problems they are now.
