you can tell you live in America. there is absolutely no chance of our UK politicians changing their minds. it will take a market failure (which we are starting to see) before the date gets moved along.

I’m sorry to hear about the UK situation. You, as well as our other UK members here, have sparked my curiosity in understanding/educating myself on your way of governance. I assumed being able to vote for an MP during the General Election gave UK citizens more of a voice.

I also assumed your House of Commons/Lords was a lot like our Senate/House of Representatives. I guess I have some learning to do.

They only want to be seen as doing something, they don't care what it is. And they want to suck dry people of all money so their mates can buy up land and property cheaply. That and make more money on fines.

Parallel to Heathrow Airport on the M4 they always have 60 limit with the signs saying "to improve air quality". This country is a joke and things are going to get a lot worse over the next 10 years.

Actually that's not correct, I don't know how aware you are of the UK voting system. I say UK but the Scottish system is completely different. But in the UK General Election of the people that actually voted, 26% voted for the current government. 74% didn't vote for them. But our first past the post system still meant they got a landslide number of seats in Parliament. The other 74% was spread over at least 6 other parties.

When people criticize the US for a winner takes all system, I enjoy pointing out results like this. A multiparty system more often than not leads to a drastically outsized influence of a minority group as the larger vote winners struggle for form a government. If results are 47%, 44%, and 9%... and you need over 50% to govern, Who is REAAAALY setting policy once the blackmail is over, and a group that shouldn't even have seat, now extorts cabinet level positions.

Yes, and that is what happens in the Scottish voting system. The SNP used to be propped up by the Greens, who held them to random making them impliment some of their stupid political green ideologies. ( the most grotesque situation occurred when a convicted rapist became a trans woman and was about to be sent to a woman's prison.)

You beat me to pointing out the SNP and Greens with all the ridiculous policies that were enacted so as to keep a majority. Nothing that the majority of voting public voted for.

And no Green MSP has ever been elected by the public, directly won an election seat. They were appointed under the shared votes system, even their leader, Patrick Harvey.

When I was visiting Shanghai China last year it was like seeing into the future: They have hundreds of thousands of cameras on their roads that also include microphones. My taxi driver was telling me that not only do you get fines for speeding or running a red light, you also get fines for tooting your horn aggressively or during the night time curfew. And who knows what other sounds the microphones are also used to pick up

The other interesting thing that I was told by a Chinese driver who used to work for me in Dalian a few years ago is that in China is that you can get Credit Points on your driving license for attending online courses - maximum one course per month I think. You can then offset the credit points against any debit points that you either have or subsequently get for speeding, jumping a red light etc. Similar I suppose to exchanging debit points in the UK for attending a speed awareness course but I rather like the idea of being able to build up credits on my driving license rather than just being able to accumulate the dreaded debit points.

Simple. Find a stretch with average speed cameras, then stop for a cigarette/sandwich/drink between cameras
