Grenadier for breaking/salvage (UK)

Indeed, in the vast majority of cases, airbag deployment is an automatic write off.
Still confused in the green grenadier example in this post how, what appears to be, relatively minor rear quarter panel damage would be a write-off or cause airbag deployment. 🤷🏻‍♂️….assuming that is the only damage the vehicle sustained.

No airbag deployed, you can see from the other pics on the original FB post. Some doubt it is a real wreck, but the wrecking business does exist at the address listed in the post (pics not taken there though).

The damage certainly looks light enough not to be written off. However, it could be that the parts delays are significant enough that any hire care replacement would generate too high a cost to wait for those parts. That has been an issue in the UK with a shortage of courtesy/hire cars for insurance and the market taking advantage. In some cases, hire car companies are recovering the cost of the car within a 3 month hire period.

Maybe the IG doesn’t have sufficient crumble zones to protect the frame in certain cases. This certainly looks like a collision from an oblique angle, maybe enough force was transmitted to the frame to bend it, which could be enough to total it.

If you are looking at these pictures from the lens of seeing collision damage done to modern cars designed to absorb impacts by crumpling as much as they can maybe the visible damage is deceiving and more force than we think was transmitted into the car's frame/body.

Interesting. During COVID/supply chain issue time, my wife got into an accident (2020 RR Sport) and the dealer estimated 9 months to a year for parts to replace front/left radiator, suspension and body damage. Between dealer, and insurance they covered @2months worth of rental expenses but it was not considered a write-off.

Ultimately the dealer helped our situation by giving us full trade-in value for the Sport and $5k off a new 2022 Sport they had.

Ineos parts prices are eye watering.

The parts for this repair were £7500. The cooler was fine, the parking sensors were re-used, the wheel and tyre were not replaced. Wing, arch extension, liner, headlight, lots of plastic bits.

As the vehicles get older more and more will be written off by minor bumps - unless Ineos reduce their prices or third parties start making replacements - and there’s probably not the demand for that.
