UK specific petrol/diesel ban for new vehicles 2030

Just thinking out loud really.

The current UK government have doubled down on no new petrol or diesel cars and vans from 2030. So only EVs or hybrids.

So while the current government will be out in 2029 and the replacement will overturn this immediately I suspect.. What if not?

- The IG as is cannot be sold, no dealer network will exist
- Servicing, warranty and repair may be a challenge with no dealers
- Can IA produce a hybrid version?
- Can the IG run on efuel, if that is to be exempted
- Used values will soar for certain

I expect this will be dropped. EV sales are not where the government hoped. And we’ll likely have a new (more sensible) government before then.

Mine is N1 commercial with every extra bar the winch. (Which I now regret not opting for)

The later BMW B57 and B58 engines are fitted with 48V "mild hybrid" system.
Given the precarious state of the electricity grid in Europe and VW planning a shutdown of 10 factories with tens of thousands potentially out of work, I suspect the political landscape on these issues will change significantly in the next 18m.... " 'Tis my fervent hope!"
Probably explains also why car theft is on the rapid rise. ... . organised crime is sending stolen cars by the container load as fast as they can from the UK, Australia, Canada etc to the Middle East ...for parts? Then they can corner online marketplaces for spares for the existing worldwide fleet of rapidly appreciating used ICE vehicles..

Oh really? I didn’t know that, what a crazy idea. Well, no reason they couldn’t be hybrid I suppose but pure electric vans are a way off being practical in terms of load capacity, range, performance and uptime.

Actually that's not correct, I don't know how aware you are of the UK voting system. I say UK but the Scottish system is completely different. But in the UK General Election of the people that actually voted, 26% voted for the current government. 74% didn't vote for them. But our first past the post system still meant they got a landslide number of seats in Parliament. The other 74% was spread over at least 6 other parties.

This might become relevant well before 2030, at least within (Continental) Europe:

In Germany, e.g., already today sales and initial traffic registrations are based on a special permit for vehicles from discontinued series issued on 19 June 2024 by the German Federal Motor Transport Authority (Kraftfahrtbundesamt) under European laws and regulations. The exemption is limited until 6 July 2025 and covers 695 vehicles. The exemption expressly states that it cannot be extended.

It would appear that as a consequence, it will no longer be permissible to market, sell, and first register a Grenadier after 7 July 2025 in Germany unless technical modifications are made to the engine/exhaust system so that the vehicles will meet applicable stricter standards.

Maybe Ineos will again use modified versions of existing BMW M57/M58 engines? My wife drives a BMW M440i with the petrol B58, a mild hybrid and to me, an exceptionally good system - like the B58 in my MY 2024 Quartermaster.

The Certificate of Conformity mentions "Euro 6" but to my understanding market authorization was based on Euro 6d, while 6e will be required in the future. My German registration expressly references the exemption, "first registration until 6 July 2025," as required by the exemption issued to the manufacturer.
