Some News..... Software update and delays/deliveries?

I found out why the delay. They are sending the update to dealers via dial up - the old 9.6kbs type and the one that always cuts out when someone calls your landline - with all the customer enquiries they are struggling to get the file across to the dealers was each uploaded takes about 6 days!!!!
OK I'll byte.... but it's a bit that's hard to swallow...🙃

However, from Ineos IT perspective that is modern, complicated stuff.

They were the good old days
Unplugging the phone or fax and plugging in a long cable to the 486
The screeching sound of the dial up modem connecting
Typing in a DOS command
Ah DOS, now you're talking my time, thought I'd never see that again 🤣

I think I may have a drive somewhere in my garage attic.

Oh no the Disk arrived and it’s a 8” floppy.

FYI googling 8" floppy might not have been the best plan!!! 🍆

I seem to recall that a week or so ago, the 92 vehicles on the dock somewhere due to come to Australia, had been given some sort of "clearance or thumbs up clarification" (I forget the words used by IA here in Australia at the time) but it conveyed the impression that they were cleared at the factory level for immediate distribution and handover once landed in Australia ... no further software updates needed. If that's the case then it would tend to indicate the"trouble" has been sorted out over a week or so ago.
It's always sorted until it isn't:
My dealer gave me the same information but quoted the end of next week. Also I believe there have been other updates released which didn't work or created other issues, so this release may not resolve the problem - time will tell.
Maybe the Oz bound ones got V1.3 and will need V1.4 once they land...

Software isn't changed that easily. The authorities of each country, like the KBA in Germany or the NHTSA in the US require a very thorough documentation of each change. A complex procedure. So that is never done quickly.
It surprises me just how regularly JLR do software updates over the air, that adjust various parameters, without any apparent impact upon type approval.

The 486!
Anyway. Software issues on a vehicle that is meant to be less software driven than is rivals... how does a year of getting software ready lead to this. I wonder what but of hardware is being replaced? Maybe the computer haha!

The change is. The documentation and the tests are not.

And an update is only the result of the whole procedure.

The last time I had to mess around with 8" floppies was around 1990 ...

The floppy drive motor was as big as a juggernaut starter.

I think the only think using Dos now is IA customer service who must be constantly dosing about.

I don’t think the update is being sent via a dial up connection, as this speed I think it’s morse code.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned laser discs yet or spool to spool tape drives, personally I'm on the side of Mr Babbage, give me clockwork and gearing any day the week and I'll make it work ;)

I think the IRS still partly use a dos based system....... or did I imagine that?

Where do you know from?

I often talk with Latin-American prostitutes, but never have to pay for the talking  , I get paid for it, by the Government

And nobody (I guess) mentioned "punch cards", I still have one in one of my textbooks, as a souvenir!
