Could you share more about your 3-D printed defrost air deflector? Thanks.

This is what exactly happened to me. I was sitting in traffic for the Vail pass yesterday and the windshield was starting to ice up so I turned on the defrost with the button. I thought it was quite warm. And it had only run for a few minutes when we heard a huge snap, and there was a crack emanating from the edge right above the defrost vent. We were sitting perfectly still, and there wasn’t even any traffic on the other side. No movement at all. It definitely was the defrost that did it. The outside temperature was probably in the teens Fahrenheit. I’ve used the defrost in exactly the same situations more than a few times and not had a problem. I recently had my one year service and I’m almost wondering if the new software changes the temperature of the defrost to make it hotter. after we got that crack, we turned off the defrost function, but we still had to try to keep the windshield warm, so we use the HVAC controls to turn on the defrost vent and then manually adjusted the fan and the temperature. I felt like even at full fan and full temp. We didn’t seem to get anywhere near the temperatures that the defrost function did. The issue is that if you want the side mirrors to be heated, I think you have to use the defrost button, correct?
Because that leads me to the second issue of the fact that these Grenadier don’t handle ice and cold as well as they should. I know there is a cold weather package, but I think they need to have an extreme cold weather package that addresses heated windshield wipers, heated jets for the headlights, and something about on the left-hand drive models that big clump of ice that accumulates on the edge of the windshield.
I think you may confirmed a suspicious that I recently have come across. Previously I had no trouble with HVAC but I reset the infotainment system by pressing mute for 30 seconds because I wanted to see if I could get rid of the beeping reverse PDC.

After that, the mileage counter went to 000000. No state of charge. After a couple of car starts, it went back to normal. I noticed yesterday that the heater was roasting hot from the window demister on manual when the ambient temperature was warm outside. So set it to auto it was then fine. Then back to manual. The system I think needs to self calibrate after a reset.

If it doesn’t fix it, I would reset the infotainment system again until it works. Basically the short answer is the software is a bit slow and sh*t and may cause the crack in the window from the temperature change from defrost.

This is nothing to do with the coolant or anything like that because previously it was all working fine.

You can see it in the photo I posted on page 22. It is roughly L shaped, the vertical portion is 2" tall and follows the rake of the windshield, sits about 3/4 away from window. The bottom of the "L" has double sided tape and adheres to the factory defrost vents. I noticed even when not on defrost there is still roasting hot air coming from the defrost (not full blast but enough I can feel). This deflector keeps that from hitting the bottom edge of the windshield. When I turn on the defrost it still clears the windshield but not a direct blast to the bottom edge.

The defrost was beyond hot when I turned it on. The car has an external temp sensor, there should be some logic as to a differential, and current air temp. Just starting the engine, versus sitting in traffic for an hour will give you different heat profiles. The issue is, that if you try to turn down the temp of the ‘button’ defrost, my guess is that you loose the heating to exterior review mirrors.

All cars and SUVs have issues with cold, snowy, road-grit issues - I just expected that the IG would handle it a bit better- or have a more comprehensive system to deal with ice-up issues. $750 worth of headlight washing, wiper heating, and some logic around the defrost would be nice. Plus on the LHD, that buildup of ice on the left side of the windshield get to be an annoyance. A metric ass-load of windshield wiper fluid helps, but I’d hate to run out.

You tried resetting the media centre by pressing the mute button for 30 seconds. Might take a a few days for the car to self calibrate.

I had Exo-shield (the 3mm standard) installed shortly after I picked up the Grenadier last March. So far so good. They also make a product called Ultra-shield (5mm I think) - their customer support (I think they’re based in Canada) told me that an installer should be able to cut it to size. I had my dealer coordinate it all for me during a business trip so I’ve never spoken to the installation contractor.
Exo-shield FTW I have it on all my cars here in AZ. I haven't replaced a windshield in over 5 years.
having my Grenadier delivered next week. Has 1,200 miles on it, Previous owner had small chip repaired with success. I'd like to have ExoShield applied. Where was yours installed?

My windscreen is getting replaced at no cost on my insurance.
I stopped counting the stone chips at 40.
Who is your insurer? My insurance company, Shannons, sold me a policy with free windscreen replacement... However when I tried to claim for my very typical Grenadier crack from above the left wiper, they refused and will only refund "fair value" costs after I pay the $2k. Not sure how much "fair value" is in AUD.

I had a windscreen replacement covered in full by AAMI in Feb last year. Cost of windscreen parts only was $2054 from my dealer, plus whatever O’Brien charges for fitting.

My dealer (Knauz) arranged it (someplace close to them). Exoshield also has an installer locator on their website

I saw this recently and wonder if the lack of “dots” is the problem🤷🏻‍♂️

That’s pretty good for YouTube. The ‘frit’ is the binder for the black coating around the that includes black pigment to make a glass enamel. It isn’t the sun’s heat that the black band protects the windshield adhesive from, its UV degradation. UV; IR- whatever it takes. The dots might create a gradient for sunlight induced heating, but pure temp I don’t see. The expansion coefficient of the glass enamel should be near that of the windshield glass, otherwise it would create stress itself.

Remember also that a windshield isn’t just glass, it’s two sheets of glass with a plastic sheet between them to keep the windhshield from shattering.

They say that know no one knows everything about how to make a pencil. I just know part of what goes into a windshield. I know the ‘yellow’ in the pencil model.

And yes, rocks and the vertical aspect are the main culprits, but I know the defrost broke mine.

Suncorp
They didn't even query it or want to know about the damage.
Put me straight through to their repairer O'Briens who doesn't have a depot anywhere near me, they contracted it out to Kingston Auto Glass in Maryborough.
They have been great and said there is now a non-oem windscreen available but they need to get a "top frame" from an Ineos dealer.
Booked in for 12th April.
