Thanks to the forum for the recommendation to purchase a Code reader! I always turn the vehicle off and never top off after the pump shuts off… this was the first time I’ve had this gremlin pop up.
Using the code reader I double checked that it was nothing serious and cleared the code. Took 3 minutes.

I was told this week by the Chicago service department that if the check engine light is NOT when the car is serviced, their updated computer program will not be able to permanently correct the problem.

... updated computer program will not be able to permanently correct the problem.
Diagnostic tools very seldom correct anything. They use car's program data, stored fault codes and hopefully also live data to point out a problem in the car's systems. This may be:
  • False fault code due to program error or CAN bus problem.
  • Lack of latest program containing corrected errors.
  • Component problem.
  • Wiring problem.
  • Mechanical fault, which often is forgotten as this may rise a code which can indicate a wrong component. For example a turbocharger fault code may be caused by a boost hose leak.
