If you don't tow, and rarely go where you need 200+ miles of range without access to a fuel station, then yeah its a hefty price to pay. I suspect that once you buy the tank, pay for installation, and pay to modify the exhaust, it will be in the ~$4K range (at least).

I would imagine partially the (fairly) low uptake rate of the option and perhaps more so the additional testing/verification/certification processes required for an OEM to offer something like this.

As far as final cost installed, hopefully at the end of April I can make a post about that But depending on what the labor rate at your local shop is, I would imagine you aren't too terribly far off. I would imagine 8-10 hours for the install which is similar to their other add-on tanks (in comparison to <3hrs for their replacement tanks)

Probably highly market dependent, I'd imagine the uptake in Australia would be pretty high..

I'd say AU would be relatively high versus the EU or NA markets but still low volume.
Only a small number of AU owners will actually use their Grenadier for extended travel in the remote central and western regions where fuel range is critical for survival. Ronny Dahl commented in a recent trip along the Gunbarrel Highway that he was closer to space than the nearest town. Cute but real.

Much of the outback is being opened up by agriculture (export cattle) and tourism which brings sealed roads, fuel stations and McDonalds. Probably not in that order.

I'm happy for the aftermarket to develop low volume accessories like aux tanks so they're user-paid and not funded by a factory program where we all pay whether you tick that option or not.

Unfortunately, there are almost no aftermarket fuel tanks that are legal in California because of CARB. LRA will not ship any of their tanks to any California address.

That said, there are lots of overland type vehicles in California with LRA tanks without issue. LRA will ship the tanks to any other state such as Nevada or Arizona and an owner could get one and bring it back to California. Once in California, the only time the fuel tank issue might come up is during a smog check, but smog check stations are not generally inspecting for fuel tanks. They only check the engine compartment and make sure there is a factory fuel filler with working gas cap. If someone painted their auxiliary tank and removed any obvious LRA logos, they would pass smog checks with no problem.
