This is my understanding of the generations.
I don’t know anyone running 0w20, not saying it doesn’t happen, but I run 5w40 here in Texas with the BMW LL01 spec and do oil changes every 5k miles, filter every 10k. I will never do the 12k miles. As far as being wasteful; we’re driving vehicles that get 13.5mpg and you’re talking 6 quarts of oil. Go ahead and change it more frequently. That's not a new issue. The hurr-durr of the seventies with thick single weight oils and 3000km oil changes persists.
Short intervals hurt nothing in the vehicle, but are pretty darn wasteful of natural resources of they're only used to 30% of their capacity and discarded.
And nothing changes even when there are Toyota trucks with over 1.6 million km, towing/hauling for the majority of those, all run with 16,000 km oil changes of 0w20 in hot places like Texas.
Every dealer serviced and factory fill Grenadier is running 0W20...I don’t know anyone running 0w20, not saying it doesn’t happen
He said toyota trucks running 1.6m KM on 0w20 while towing and working and doing 12k km oil changes. But as far as the Grenaider goes that's exaclty why I don't follow their service plan. 12,000 miles on 0w20 is stupid.Every dealer serviced and factory fill Grenadier is running 0W20...
All of our Toyotas went 10k on 0W-20; and while yes, it is thicker; MB does 20k miles on 0W-40 (or 5W30, or 5W40)...He said toyota trucks running 1.6m KM on 0w20 while towing and working and doing 12k km oil changes. BMW use to say 16k until they had too many failures so they backed it down. The 0w20 is due to CAFE laws and there to get you to the end of warranty, not to keep it running forever. It boosted BMWs mpg by 3% across the board. When they first went to 0w20 the oils couldn't meet the stringent requirements of LL01/LL04 so they lost the spec. A new spec had to be designed. Weights of oils is a US thing. It comes down to HTHS and in Germain they don't run 0w20 in these motors. Wear tests show that 0w20 doesn't hold up nearly as well as a heavy 5w30/40. Best thing for it is a LL01 oil unless you know your fuel meets the 10ppm sulfur requirements then run a LL04 oil with a MB 229.51 spec and if you're lucky to find it a Porsche A40 or C40 spec. A bottle with that is better than anything else. BMW's spec focuses more on corrosion resistance, MB lubricity tolerances, and Porsche runs the hell out of it looking for breakdown. Switching from 0w20 to QS Euro 5w40 made it run much smoother. The heat and pressures have been great even when off roading in the desert in 105+heat and the used oil analysis I've done at my oil change intervals have shown the oil holding up well with very good engine wear numbers. When people track the B58 they all run the heavier weight oils. When they first came out with the Ecodiesel Jeep was recommending a lighter oil until they had too many main bearing failures. Eventually they had to back off and let people go back to using Rotella T6. If it's designed for fuel efficiency it isn't designed for it's longest life. All of our Toyotas went 10k on 0W-20; and while yes, it is thicker; MB does 20k miles on 0W-40 (or 5W30, or 5W40)...
Even BMW does 10k with 0W-12 on the B58TU2.
12k intervals wouldn't be recommended from a manufacturer who has a (internally) published engine longevity expectation if it was detrimental; however, if you want to change it more frequently, please do
