I am the photographer (it is a hobby) and I chartered the helicopter and had the pilot take me wherever. He knows the Cape like the back of his hand, so I just asked him to go to his favourite places over 4 days! I had one request, visit Cape Melville. I did a similar thing in Arnhem Land and Kakadu (4 days), and the Kimberley out of Derby (2 days I think) with different pilots.
It is hard to take poor images in these places. They all seem to turn out great, provided you take enough.
I had two cameras on me while flying with different lenses and I asked him to maneuver in certain ways so I get the best light. We flew with no doors and I just took the shots out the doorway.
My technique, and challenges faced, are described in this Blog post.
We worked together to get the shots as he could see so much on the ground as we flew around. The images on that trip and
in those blog posts are amazing. That red seam is bauxite in the first shot, east side of Cape York.
I met the pilot, Bungie, at an Australian Wildlife Conservancy Supporter’s Event at Piccaninny Plains Station in Cape York.
Spending some time in his helicopter around Piccaninny Plains it gave me the idea to charter him for trip around Cape York. It opened my eyes to how different the landscape looks in a helicopter to compliment my ground trips.
I had already had a great helicopter at
Mornington Station in the Kimberley at an earlier AWC Supporter’s Event. I was hooked after the second flight.
