This is one of my favorite Larson drawings

The above excellent cartoon reminded me: My late Dad was a WW2 Returned Serviceman ("Veteran") who was deployed aged 19 in 1942 to New Guinea to fight against the Japanese forces of the day... to get there involved a full week on a "troop" train ( about 2000miles) followed by a sea voyage through hostile waters.
For years afterwards, one of his favourite "Dad" jokes I remember from about the age of 3 or 4 yrs was when he saw a goods (freight) train carting cattle was "what did one cow say to another in the cattle wagon?" "Pull your bloody head in Daisy, the Japs will think it's a troop train!!" As we grew, us three brothers would chorus the punch line because we realised we could say " bloody" without censure🤩

A memory from 19th January 2019 just popped up on my Facebook page.
A picture I took at the local shopping centre
On the left is a Mazda 2, a compact city car for a small family or single, as shown by the young girl on L plates.
On the right is a full size family Holden EH station wagon from 1964.
How things have changed.
We used to fit mum, dad, the 4 kids and all of our luggage in one and go for a two week holiday
My brother and two sisters on the back seat and me squashed between mum & day on the front bench.
No need for seat belts.

Difference is, all the safety/protection built in, it's like a reverse tardis on the modern vehicles
