Keep in mind that many of their customers will have multiple cars and a couple of houses.
None of the buyers will use it as a daily driver so if something breaks and they have to wait a few months they will just drive one of their other vehicles.

I thought that purpose what to develop a no nonsense "old school" , 'basic' vehicle, thus why no vanity mirrors, power seats etc.

Absolutely. I had a look at these vehicles at LeTech shortly before they were delivered. I'm very tall, but it's not that easy to get in. The red is a great colour. Much better than the paler fire engine red. Because this vehicle was standing right next to it in the hall.
