Vegans
I was just in at Hervey Bay and stopped at a bakery for a coffee and some lunch.
Table next to me there was a young boy and girl, about 10-12 years old, and an older couple, maybe late 60-70's.
They had bought the kids a meat pie and a milkshake each for lunch.
The boy started up with "Gran, we can't eat this, we are vegans"
Gran said "what do you mean vegans"?
Girl replied "we don't eat the flesh of animals"
Grandad replied "it isn't flesh, it's a meat pie"
Boy replied "that is flesh of a murdered animal and this is milk from an animal"
Gran replied "don't be silly. While you are here with us you will eat what you are given and you will finish everything on your plate"
Grandad added "or you will go damned hungry"

I was trying hard not to laugh my head off.

Needless to say the kids finished off every bit of their pie and milkshake

I love the way they stopped translating into German and just said, stuff it, that will do.

Germans understand English. English know a few German words, mostly from watching WW2 films with their dads, and from eating foreign sounding sausages whilst drinking foreign sounding beer :)

Europeans I have dealt with typically speak at least 2 languages and often 3 or more.
I learnt German, French and Latin at school but that was a long time ago.
Latin has helped me on trips to Italy and Spain over the years.
