Redcone trail is not really that hard from the video above. A couple of spots, and a legendary decent from the mountain peak. But I would take a stock Grenadier. Leave the Defender mall crawler at home however,

You are dead right on all counts. But I can't make the decision.

I will go with the Grenadier, if only because if I don't satisfy this itch I have with the Defender-style of vehicle I will forever wonder... And I think a version of the JLR product will always be around if it's the wrong decision. Which left the Troopy (sleeping in) and the Grenadier. I am getting old (been shot in three locations while overseas on deployment) and the back/ legs are getting less mobile. But the Troopy, I believe, will always be around (or a car like it). While I am a spring chicken at something close to 50 years of age I'll grab the Grenadier.

But I guess I was pointing out that it's not always an obvious call between cars in the AUD$90 - 120K range.

Cheers mate. But to be honest is was my privilege to get all the opportunities. Had a ball of a time, loved what I did (Black Hawk pilot), made life-long mates across the world and got paid for it all!

No need for thanks here! If anything - thanks to the taxpayer for the wage! I'd do it all again - it was a blast.

I'll return to this thread after posting way back in the day.
Q: If there were no Grenadier, and I was in the market for an all purpose 4x4.
A: Honestly, no idea. Most modern iterations are to me are butt ugly , for a start.
And a bit common. I don't do "common".
And packed with "features" I've never needed , don't want and refuse to pay for!

You could always buy an old Defender.
lgnore the silly prices some dealers are asking.
The best late model ones are around £30,000. My local specialist dealer has a 15,000 mile Puma Station Wagon at £25,995

I nearly did , but in Australia they were grossly overpriced for what they were/are.
And I detest the lack of shoulder room. Reminds me of my '73 Series Landy. I wonder why?

but at 5 times the price of the Grenadier, it was a no brainer to try Grenadier…I’m glad I did. This forum is changing my POV with regards to the purpose of the Grenadier, of being a global overlander/expedition tool vs weekender 4x4. Of course, there is nothing wrong with weekender 4x4 fun, but I truly respect the spirit of purpose the Grenadier is built on. I’m learning.

Good grief that's an absolutely insane price.
But for those who won the lottery, l guess it's the ultimate "classic" Defender and certainly very well executed.

My local Land Rover independent specialist has an absolutely pristine 16,000 mile old model Defender Station Wagon at £26,000 (around $33,000)

Now that's worth buying, if you fancy an old Defender

You could always get one of these if you wanted something different with a heap of room with 62k klms for AU $65k

I actually purchased a 1997 Defender 110 with the Diesel. Now I am trying to sell the beast. I bought the 110 before I ever considered the Gren seriously. See below:

Drove my 1988 landcruiser for 36 years. Never thought I would own anything else. So I was torn between the IG and the new LC250. Test drove the cruiser it just wasn't the Land Cruiser I knew and loved... just not rugged. It confirmed my desire to get an IG. Bought my Grenadier two weeks ago and I already have 2000+ miles on it and I love it.

The 250 is a Landcruiser by name only, in AU its called a Prado, the 300 is a Landcruiser, I drove the 300 and the Grenadier is a far more rugged well built vehicle than the 300

The 250 is a Landcruiser by name only, in AU its called a Prado, the 300 is a Landcruiser, I drove the 300 and the Grenadier is a far more rugged well built vehicle than the 300
yup, at first i scoffed at those who were calling it a prado not a cruiser. But when I saw it, sat in it and drove it, I had to agree, it's just a prado, not a land cruiser.

I came close to getting a 79 series Land Cruiser V8. Glad I didn’t. Although I wish the grenadier sounded like one.

I think in Australia it's the sound that wins most (quite possibly why many are scoffing at the cylinder) I love the growl of the BMW 6, especially when it's working off road
