Here are a few options in 255/80 R17 (33 x 10 inches)
  • Cooper ST MAXX / 32.8 x 10.2 / E / Q (up to 99 mph) / 18.5/32" tread depth / 58 pounds
  • Nitto Ridge Grappler / 33.3 x 10.0 / E / Q (up to 99 mph) / 16.5/32" tread depth / 55 pounds
  • Toyo Open Country AT 3 / 33.1 x 10.0 / E / R (up to 106 mph) / 16.3/32" tread depth / 53 pounds
  • Falken Wildpeak AT3W / 33.1 x 10.0 / E / S (up to 112 mph) / 17/32" tread depth / 52.5 pounds
The Toyo R/T Trail 255/80R17 has floated to the top of my list.

This may sound like a dumb question but are all e rated tires 10 ply, d rated 8 ply?

Same. Kind of wished had option for even a size (inch) smaller rim with say a 255/85/16
Alas the brakes are too large for a 16" wheel....

More or less, but from a long drawn out podcast I listened to last year.... In modern times "ply" ratings don't actually directly equate to the number of plies as they may have 30 years ago, but more so a generalized thickness of the material.

This has been done, if memory serves me correctly it was a Donny Grey on Methods...

The sidewalls of tires are no longer 10-ply or 8-ply or really any-ply :)

Those designations go back to an earlier time when the numbers actually corresponded to the number of plies in the sidewalls. Today, we keep those terms but they really are just place-holders for sidewall strength. So E-rated tires are described as 10-ply, but, in fact, most have three distinct layers or plies.

Here are the Load Ratings for tires (the letter on the left), and the equivalent number of plies (the number on the right) - based on the older design of tires:

A 2
B 4
C 6
D 8
E 10
F 12
G 14
H 16
J 18
K 20
L 22
M 24
N 26

I was thinking about this tire size for the Grenadier after I go through the factory ones. I run them on my 2” lifted 2016 F150 on 17 rims, it’s essentially a 34x11.5, so an inch shorter and inch narrower than the standard 35x12.50 everyone compres to off-road . Those 2 inches come in handy for fitting well and not rubbing, and for being able to use factory rims.

It is a weird size, but compared to 5-7 years ago when I first started using them there are a lot more options now.

I just put on 385 70R 18 Toyo's. If you go larger, you may have to use a spare tire extender plate.

That's a 39-inch tire! Obviously just a typo :)

285/70 R18 is about 33.7 inches in height. After mounting the tires, did you cycle the suspension to check for rubbing?

Do you notice any rubbing on road? A 90-degree turn onto a small on-ramp (like turning into a parking lot or driveway) will often cause the front tire on the inside of the turn to rub on the rear fender well - if the tire is too large.

Do you notice any rubbing off-road when approaching full articulation?

Thanks in advance!

Looks great! ?

However, I want a tire which
- is noiseless
- comfortable
- robust
- good for Mud, Tarmac, Gravel and whatsoever
- has an excellent performance in summer, winter, snow, on ice and in the rain
- looks good
- is good for 70000 kms
- and doesn't cost much.

Any ideas? ?

I will watch with interest on this one, I am loving the photos starting to come out now with small lifts and aftermarket wheels and bigger tyres.

Whilst I would love to do it to mine, I can’t warrant the expense if I am honest and wouldn’t see any real benefit to my driving, would look awesome though. 😊

Agile Offroad mounted 285/75r17. He said after a day of wheeling there was no rubbing but wouldnt guarantee it definitely wouldn’t rub. No lift.
