The fwd part of the side curtain airbag.
It blows the edge of the trim away. You can see it here in slow mo at 30 secs.
According to the diagram @DCPU posted there are not airbags in the pillars. However, I have no clue what’s underneath that white wrap-it could very well be an airbag.
Curtain airbags run across the top of the windows and part way down the front pillars. see no. 4 in the diagram above. It lines up with that photo above with the trim off.

I can't comment on other parts of the world, but here in Australia they can be pretty particular about anything that even partially obscures the driver's field of vision that isn't part of the vehicle's approved design (dashcams, satnavs, even fishing rod holders on bullbars). The grab handle on the passenger's side is mounted on the inside facing part of the A pillar and sticks out a bit across the edge of the windscreen. So if a vehicle is complianced without a grab handle on the driver's A pillar, adding one could technically make the vehicle unroadworthy.
My photos of one of the PT vehicles at our last test drive show the passenger side handle clearly visible through the windscreen from the outside, so it does take up some of the forward corner view from the seat. It's possible Ineos could have designed a handle that sat more in line with the A pillar, but then I guess it would have stuck out into the door opening too far.
