I'm certainly not sure that is true. The law is very clear and you gamble with big stakes if you take that view.
Watch any of these police videos and see the outrageous acts that people get clean away with. Even those who are caught seem to end up with pathetically weak penalties. I have a paranoid friend that has always carried a baseball bat and never had an issue. I do remember him using it once on another vehicle and still no arrests. As said previously. I have never felt intimidated enough that I wish I had a weapon with me. The only major transgressions in UK seem to be speeding, straying into bus lanes, etc.

Here in the UK, despite strict laws saying otherwise, they really don't care what you carry in your vehicle as long as it doesn't go bang. Any type of firearm is a complete no no. Baseball bats, Machetes, carving knife. The most that is likely to happen, unless actually used in the wrong way, would be confiscation of said article.
As much as I love firearms and would carry one if legal to do so, in my 60 plus years I have never experienced a situation where I wished I actually had one on my person whilst travelling.
If you keep a baseball bat in the car, the key in the US is make sure you have a glove and some related items too, so after you beat the hell out of someone, you can imply the bat was not a pre-conceived weapon, but rather something that happened to be in your car.

Indeed, that was my point: that the law exceeds what is typically enforced wrt visitors.
Presuming one isn’t brandishing it as a weapon but rather has it on hand/at the bottom of a bag for the purposes mentioned.
I went to Bunnings hardware store yesterday and on going through the self service checkout it came to a stop, beeped and flashed "wait for a team member to arrive"
Turns out I had a can of spray paint and had to show ID to prove I was over 18, the Team Member also advised this applied to any concealable knives, buy it was Ok to buy a chainsaw or axe.

I always find if a bit bored that watching one of those youtube videos where the guy explains his EDC (every day carry) and even better if he has a get home bag.

A significant chunk of the market for this car in the UK does include shotgun and (in fewer case
s) rifle owners who seek somewhere to store a firearm while on the move. It's rarely catered for among manufacturers. The key thing is to have somewhere safe, concealed and ideally secure. This is not a "just in case" need. You would only transport a firearm for a specific use. The police would take a dim view if you left your car for any length of time with a gun on board, if the car was subsequently stolen. Equally it's unwise to drive around an urban area with an accessible blade of any size beyond a pen knife. It's a pity the Grenadier hasn't such a useful built in lockable and discrete space but no doubt there will be accessories in the wings.
Black Sheep seem to have a lot of options so one or two might show up for the Grenadier

I don’t think you have a problem with a Swiss Army knife in Europe. You are just not allowed to take it in a plane.
Actually, I fly with my Swiss Army knife, which I always carry in my pocket, every time and never had a problem. Only going to USA and Israel I didn't dare. I always put it on top of my hand luggage going through the scanner and wait patiently and friendly for the staff to discover that it is allowed to have it on the plane.

I'd feel flattered if someone asked to show ID to prove I was over 18.
At the supermarket alcohol check out I'm normally asked " has your doctor cleared you to drink alcohol at your age"

Things can be so wacky here, that I was prevented entry into an amusement park because I had a Swiss Army money clip that had a blade less than 3 inches.

I got stopped at Frankfurt airport because they found a small 50mm instrumentation screwdriver tucked in the bottom of my bag.
It was the type of thing you give away to customers with the company logo on it.
I estimate it had been in my bag for at least 3 or 4 years and 30 flights
I told the guy he could keep it as a gift

I was stopped from taking/wearing a small daypack into a museum in Rome.
Turns out the reason had nothing to do with what was inside, they said people forget they are wearing them on their back and turn around, knock things over or smack into other people.
I slid it around onto my chest and he was Ok

Agreed. Common sense and being aware goes a long way. Never felt truly unsafe while traveling outside of the US, either. I just find it a bit silly that one has to have an articulable justification (that is largely subjective) for having a Swiss Army knife on oneself (depending on which Western European country). It would make for a pretty poor weapon overall, but is perfect for many tasks from fixing eye glasses, to opening a bottle of wine on a picnic. Very utilitarian, and why I like to have one around.
Just get one without a blade longer than about 4"

The law here in Australia also requires you to have a reasonable excuse for having a knife on your person or in your vehicle. Even buying a kitchen knife from the supermarket will require an over 18 check. In reality unless police suspect you of something else or unless you are being a dick to them your excuse can be pretty basic. For my 4wd I have a hunting/bush knife that I keep with a few other bits of basic survival tools like a flint, a lifestraw water purifier, space blanket, snake bite bandages, spot locator and a first aid kit. My excuse would be that I sometimes day trip 4wd at short notice and I have a basic survival kit in case of breakdown or accident.

The reasonable excuse rule is something I was referencing in an earlier post. Seems like a common requirement in Western Europe, too (France, Portugal, Spain, (Italy?)), even if what is being carried is “an ordinary pen knife” (non locking, short, single edged blade). The reason seems to be highly subjective, so likely best to simply be polite to any officer, present oneself well.

Seems like it’s never quite an issue, but never occurs to me in the US that I need an excuse to have one… perhaps I’ll just carry around some cured sausage that needs cutting All all times next time I’m abroad…

Always a good principle. Like all humans cops generally give back what they get, there are if course some nazi exceptions, but generally if you treat them with respect and good humour you will get a much better result. You see all these idiots who refuse basic requests argue with cops, abuse cops and that never leads to a good result. Cops have a fair bit of discretion, if a cop pulls you over and you are dick to them, fair chance they will go over your car with a fine tooth comb looking for something to write an extra ticket up for, a worn tyre or a cracked light lens or a stone chip in a windscreen etc. if you greet them with a smile and good morning officer and happily show them your licence and follow their requests you sometimes even manage to get off with a warning even if you did do something minor wrong.

It's OK to carry an axe for firewood , a shovel for recovery/putting out campfires - thus a machete for slicing large potatoes should be acceptable.
Great tools , machetes.

I tend not to buy alcohol at a supermarket. Then again I don't buy bread at a service station! Avoids awkward questions , like are you gluten intolerant?
Which I'm not but ya know , engaging with checkout people just holds up the line.
