Looking at the Owl Mojos

But seriously - what an awesome thing to be able to ask the question and have feedback from all over the world within one day from so many informed owners. Amazing.
One thing to consider with the Mojos, is a problem experienced by a Sprinter owner this weekend... Not saying you'll be off roading with your snow tires, but still something to consider

Ok - after watching the YouTube links and listening to your feedback re K02’s and your own winter driving experience (it was awesome hearing about temp, fresh vs pack, dry vs wet, all the way from Durango to Ontario, I THINK the right thing to do for winter in my situation, which would probably be similar to Manitoba, Quebec and Ontario, would be to lean more towards Nordic winter tires with no studs - would do better with ice and hard pack, but also handle dry pavement and Interstate driving. I hope this is a good synthesis of your collective input, and a good general approach for a place like Wisconsin or Minnesota. I have the stock 17” steelies - I’m not going to swap tires - I’ll just get a whole new set of wheels and swap each season. Looking at the Owl Mojos, but could also just do a second set of the steelies. Or maybe I keep the steelies for winter and do the Mojos for the other 3 months of the year ;o) Not sure. Would EVENTUALLY like to size up on tires and do the Eibach lift, but am sort of waiting for the noise to die down and see what you all think after having some time to process your experience. I’ve seen some owners regret the choice to lift and size up - so maybe stay stock size for now. If you have a strong opinion, let me know. Regardless, think I will definitely do a dedicated winter tire - like Hakkapeliita or Michelin X-Ice Snow.

But seriously - what an awesome thing to be able to ask the question and have feedback from all over the world within one day from so many informed owners. Amazing.
From Consumer Reports.
“By definition, most tires in this category have excellent snow traction and braking grip on ice, but their performance varies in other tests. The Bridgestone Blizzak WS90 and Michelin X-Ice Snow top the category, followed by the Continental VikingContact 7. Each of these three CR-recommended tires has slight advantages in different tests. The Blizzak WS90 has the most consistent scores across our tests and excels in resistance to hydroplaning, giving a slight edge over the Michelin. The Michelin is quieter and has a better rolling resistance rating than the Bridgestone, which aids fuel economy. The Continental has the best noise and rolling resistance scores of the three.”

What in the ever living hell? Is there something else you prefer that has a little offset like that without the same valve vulnerability ? I’m not sure what you’ve done, personally, for wheels or tires - just like I call Krabby “Your Holiness,” I think you should be “The Professor.” I’ve rarely seen someone who can go that deep - on about 1000 automotive disciplines.

The Owl Talon has more inset valve stem locations, as do the Agile Off Road and Black Rhino wheels; all with similar offsets.

And thank you for the kind words, being well versed on various platforms is literally in my job description :p

Well, my family thinks I’m either a spy or an incompetent buffoon, and usually I end up in the ER when I break out the serious equipment and tools, so I appreciate the competent insight.

For the extreme wet ice, deep snow or layered frozen snow conditions tyre chains work on any tyre. Though 5-10 minuntes for fitting and not high speeds.
Yep - that’s an option when I’m out in the woods snowshoeing in winter. I was looking for more of a recommendation for daily driving. Around town and out skiing a couple times a week, so on city roads, lightly or untreated rural roads, usually ploughed but sometimes not if it’s coming down heavy. I think most of the forum members’ feedback is I can make the K02’s work, but a dedicated Nordic winter tire would be best for my situation. I’m going to listen to their collective wisdom on this. We get a lot of hard-pack and ice, and on many days, it’s colder at my house than the North Pole (the local weather loves to point that out whenever it happens - like that somehow makes the misery better). In the winter, every Wisconsinite carries a set of chains with them- and at least 3 ice scrapers - and chemical hand and foot warmers - and emergency blankets - and . . .

Why not just get a set of steel wheels. That was my plan.

Why not just get a set of steal wheels. That was my plan.
I’ve already got the steelies - 17”. I don’t know - and this is probably just vanity, but since the winter tire will be less aggressive looking than the K02’s, a bit of offset would give it a wider stance so I don’t look like a lame mall crawler - well, at least a little less so. I readily admit this is pure insecurity and cowardice. ON THE OTHER HAND, they’re just winter tires, so another option is to get the stock alloy for winter, and keep the steelies for rest of year. I just can’t see running steelies with the winter tires. It would just look contradictory IMO. The K02’s look like they BELONG on steelies. Maybe I’m wrong - usually that’s the case, and one of you (or my wife) puts me on the right track.

Unless you actually meant “steal wheels” and didn’t just misspell “steel wheels,” in which case, please provide your address in Austin and ignore the noise in your garage late at night this weekend.

Sorry - one modification to this. I called my Ineos dealer this morning - he didn’t have the exact number on hand for the stock 17” alloys, but said they did this recently for a customer (purchased the alloys separately after delivery), and he said it was stupid expensive - like $4k. For the 17’s! Just the rims, not the tires! I was really surprised, because when you do the online config, it’s just a $700 up charge. Anyhow, the Ineos dealer said “if you’re running these for winter, get Black Rhino with Blizzak LT’s.” I got a quote from a local truck specialist - $2850 all-in (wheels, tires, sensors) for 5. Would just need to get the Agile bracket to flip and mount that spare. Would definitely wait until late November / early December once we really start to get into it. K02’s probably fine for the less frequent stuff in Oct/Nov.

Confirm what sensors they are using. TPMS on the Grenadier is position specific and must be programmed at a dealer currently.

At Expo West we chatted with John @ Agile who also mentioned issues with getting the factory system to accept non-OEM sensor codes.

The other option, and one that seems to have the most success, is to use Autel MX sensors and program them to clone the factory sensors

Excellent point - that’s actually what they said they would probably have to do - clone the factory sensors

So the truck shop (which hasn’t done a Grenadier before) spoke to Black Rhino - their (Black Rhino’s) dealer sales rep had personally cloned the Grenadier sensors, walked them through it, and verified they use the same tool. I ended up buying the Blizzak LT’s (this came down to performance and future availability for replacement - Nokian’s are getting tougher to find) and the Black Rhino Yellowstones in gunmetal gray. Yes I know you hate them, Anand, and I know they look a fair bit like the stock alloys (which are pornographically expensive, according to my Ineos dealer). But, these are just winter tires, not what I’m using off-road. Don’t need a dump valve, not scraping rocks on trails. They were just less annoying to me than some others - I was going for something somewhat inconspicuous. These are functional tires, not fun tires, so no point bragging about them with something over-the-top tough looking. I’ll get the spare bracket from Owl or Agile to flip the spare. The shop will just hang on to them for me - I’ll put them on in late November or whenever the Norse god Friezjorkeister decides to come to Wisconsin.

No beef about Black Rhinos or Blizzaks here :)

I'm not a huge fan of their wheel designs, but to each their own!!

And, to be bluntly honest, even those of us that air down regularly don't need dump valves or dual valve stems

Like I said - it was the least annoying. Most of their designs look like a 13 year old boy on adderall came up with it. Fair point about the dump valve - “nurse, I need decompression - STAT!!!” Just couldn’t spare the extra 3 minutes, huh, sport?

I did the Blizzak LT - close enough to your recommendation to show a little gratitude, but deviating slightly so I can pose and posture and be a nuisance.

Wait, isn’t that how we’re supposed to blend in?
A bunch of middle aged dads dadsplaining to one another? I guess that’s the vibe. What’s upsetting is when people like Anand who are genuinely competent screw it up for guys like me who like to pontificate and bloviate with absolutely no basis in fact.

I ended up doing the Owl spare bracket instead of Agile. It’s adjustable and you can flip the spare. So we’ll see how the winter goes on these. And if anyone has suggestions for winter wheels OTHER than the Black Rhino Yellowstones, let me know. It’s just for winter, not looking for dual valve or bead lock - will be on 3-4 months. Would be nice to have just a little offset. “Inconspicuous and not obnoxious” should be the look. Then they get put away in March and I go back to fun. Already ordered the Yellowstone but not installing until November so I can switch.

Anyone any good at photo shop. I wonder what a Donny grey Trialmaster would look like with white wheels 17”, and a white wrapped roof.

I am useless at anything like that but think it might look quite good with winter/AT tyres on it.
