Mines the opposite. Whines under load and quietens down when backing off. This is the second TC if had in her and is better than the first, but still disconcerting.

Hi all,

Is a dull whine noise when decelerating ( coasting) normal for the Grenadier ( diesel)?
I only notice it if I’m driving over 70k’s per hour and it goes away as soon as I touch the accelerator.

Cheers

Same here, under deceleration only... at least that I've noticed. Not very loud.

The apparent "whining" in the transmission is a defining characteristic of "straight cut" gears used in the transfer case.
Check out this relatively short but helpful explanation: https://www.carthrottle.com/news/advantages-and-disadvantages-straight-cut-gears
The Tremec company have been making race car straight-cut gearboxes forever and hence their incorporation in the IG transfer case is no surprise.
The "super V8" series at one stage mandated a "control" 6 sp straight cut gearbox supplied by Tremec. ...(perhaps they still do) Sometimes the in-car audio would pick up the whining noise which was sufficiently loud to draw the attention of the race commentator ...

I've noticed across 4 loan cars and mine in the last year that the gear whining is louder when the car is new. Henry is perceptibly quieter in this respect now than 12months ago on delivery.

Cheers

Thanks for the explanation, Denis. I wasn't aware the Grenadier transfer case had straight-cut gears and was thinking I had a diff problem.

Today I took the car out in the rain and on dirt to make sure it wasn't just the Goodriches but the noise was still there.

It is worst above 100kph on the overrun but absent in normal driving accelerating or cruising.

The car has only just done 2,000 ks. Maybe it hasn't had enough time on the overrun to smooth the teeth off on the back rather than when accelerating.

When the car goes in for its first checkup I'll be sure to get it noted as protection if the noise gets worse or there's some other transmission failure.
