Hi all,

Is a dull whine noise when decelerating ( coasting) normal for the Grenadier ( diesel)?
I only notice it if I’m driving over 70k’s per hour and it goes away as soon as I touch the accelerator.

Cheers

I have a similar issue starts around 60 but under acceleration and deceleration

If you can't say if it comes from front or rear (in case it is final drive) I would think it is the transfer box. I assume ther is a two-stage gearing for output shafts and this may cause some noise. If you still are at low mileage I would follow it for a while as things are still running-in. But if it continues (and in wors case increases) I would at least register a case for later guarantee work.

On about 20000 k’s , so should be all run in. Will monitor closely, I believe it’s always done it, but usually have the radio on.

There should be no whining, only the normal hum. But crawl underneath and check anything which maybe rubbing against the drive shaft. Bowden/transfer box cable with a metal conduit casing maybe rubbing which was a common issue in the past.

The transfer box is gear driven as opposed to chain driven in most 4x4s. Gear driven transfer boxes do whine a little, most noticeably on the overrun.

I drove an early production Grenadier for about 300 miles and it had a definite “whine” from the transfer case. As the newer vehicles I drove did not exhibit the same noise, I asked about it and was told that there had been a revision to the transfer case on later production models. I can’t offer when the revision happened though.

I have a lot of whine on overrun from the t-case. Also have the clunking on downshift to 2nd gear, so I’m wondering if it’s shimmed properly. It’s on my dealer list for later this year.

Ok, has it always done it?
Hi David, only had the car a year 30000K, in summer the first 15000K I didn't notice it but mostly had the window down or safari window open. It has got my attention in the last 15000K and a lot of that has been towing. I did notice metal on the front diff magnetic fill plug ( not too concerning if it had not been cleaned during the 15000K service but if it was cleaned I checked it about 2000K after the service it is concerning )

In my experience all gear boxes will whine, louder on deceleration and more so on declines. My 00 Peugeot 206 XT had it, diesel Ranger (09 and 18 models) had it, my 06 Triton V6 petrol had it, and even my new 23 modem DMax with 1.9L has it but only on deceleration and a decline - not on flat oddly.

If the gear box was clunking/thudding - I would be more concerned for sure.

me too. neither were there when new. It is definitely speed related and changes pitch and intensity with accel/decell/load.

I assume you're RDS for a dealer. Let me know when you're going to go in and I'll schedule mine at the same time. I get the weird feeling the response will be "that's normal" and it ain't normal.

I hear a little transfer case whine on the highway. It reminds me of the v-drive gear whine on my old ski boat. Sounds normal considering the way the transfer case is built.

Will do. I’m thinking early December as we have a seemingly floating closing date on our new home. Hope to be in by Thanksgiving.

This reminds me of the mid-1990’s t-case whine. Which was rectified by an updated cross-drilled shaft (lubrication) and preload adjustment.
