VED (Initial Road Tax) - UK Only!

This make the second hand Grenadiers on Autotrader seem amazing value. You can now pick up one for £40,000 with around 10k miles on it. You can spend 40k on all sorts family hatchbacks..
Totally agree, whatever you do, don't get a valuation of your car from these websites, it will scare you.

Who in their right mind thought that £5490 VED was sustainable?

Because they are fun, jI have just bought a Civic Type R.I had bought one and sold it immediately to buy the Grenadier (two years ago and made a slight profit too). However, I missed the handling of the car, there is nothing like it. The absolute opposite of the Grenadier, it goes precisely where you want it. I like the smaller, pointy and nippy hatchbacks, however I do realise the Civic is a largish hatch. I also find the Golf R and JCW Mini appealing.
I just enjoy playing devils advocate ;)

Personally my fave car from my past, for handling and horses, was my Volvo 850 T5. For comfort Volvo XC90 inscription. I am guilty of being a serial Volvo and Defender owner. My one adventure into hatchbacks was a Mazda 3, 2lt sport. I had it just 4 months. Then traded in for a Volvo S60.

I get what you are saying.

I have a IG, Porsche 718 boxter and the new Mini EV Cooper sport (which is the same as the JCW but without the boost button). The mini is just plain fun to drive. It puts a smile on the face in similar way my old Defender Puma did. And noteably, I don't get that same smile with the IG.

40 ish years of Series Land Rovers and Defenders - from an SII shorty (1962), through numerous Station Wagons, finishing with a 2008 Puma 110 XS Station Wagon - every single one of them put a smile om my face, and a huge dent in my bank balance :ROFLMAO: And now, Maggie my Grenadier puts the same smile on my face - maybe even a size bigger smile as at nearly 2 years old (touch wood) she has yet to breakdown 🤞 It's almost sad that you are missing that pleasure.

I've never owned anything particularly sporty, never really had the urge beyond the T5; although I always dreamed of an Aston Martin DBwhatever. The roads here would destroy one in short order.
