Roof rack better in the gutter or on the grab rails?

Anyone else in Aus who has taken delivery of their Grenadier care to tap on the bracket with a coin or screwdriver (or give ‘em a bite with your pearly whites) to confirm they are some kind of metal?

in lieu of a bite ... a "subtle" indentation with a small screwdriver suggests they're formed from some sort of high density polymer material... I'm not up on my polymer chem. these days to identify exactly what sort of polymer it might be. The bar probably aluminium alloy. The concave liner of the "Alpine" cavity however appears to be a vinyl material.

If it's metal then it's not ferromagnetic.. I used a fairly strong magnet.. there was no "attraction"...

Also tried and definitely not magnetic. Some cast aluminium maybe powdercoated?

I have pulled them off to install my uhf antenna, pretty sure they are plastic.i was thinking of getting some metal ones fabricated...

They are not, but if you like we can produce this part for you in military grade aluminium, stainless steel or even titanium.

@Black Sheep FYI if you get enquiries from AU. See above re the handrail brackets being plastic for AU vehicles.

I don't want to withhold this picture from you.
Here we have loaded a single element with 240kg for test purposes. From 180kg the panel starts to bend minimal. With a load of 240kg it achieves a deflection of 4mm.
We install 2 elements as standard, optionally also 3 elements. We are therefore far above the required stability.
If we have customers who are struggling with the platform remaining on the plastic rails, we can raise the platform 5mm with simple inserts.

I note the key information missing in this discssusion is the reason why you dont just depend on mounting a roof rack just to the gutter, like most of current 4x4's.
You need to question why did INEOS put a flat roof on the Grenadier with supports down the length of the roof?
Why does LeTECH and Black sheep ( Germany ) both utilise the Grenie grab handle bolts for additonal support for a roof rack? They explained their roof racks use those grab handle factory fixings that reduces the overall roof structure and factory load specifications.

There is a misconception that the BSI rack is attached to the lashing tube.

I thought the same thing until I saw one their more recent videos. The idea of using the grab handle fixing points to secure an awning is something I'm going to investigate once I get my hands on the vehicle.

The only modification I made is insert a small piece of HDPE between the base of the legs and the outer edge of the gutter to maintain the leg as close as possible to the inner side of the gutter.
