Road Trip 3,000 miles. What Essential Items

I am planning a 3,000 mile long road trip in the Grenadier next year. What essential items would you recommend I pack, other than extra oil, jumper cables and tire inflation kit? No offloading will occur doing the trip.

Just drive it.

I did a 4,600mi trip when my truck was about 3 weeks old and the only "essential" I packed was myself and snacks/beverages for the fridge. The trip home from the dealer was ~1k miles, again, snacks/beverages were the biggest planning item.

I guess the inflation kit is always good to have, and I'd go with a lithium jump pack instead of jumper cables (takes up less space and doesn't require a second vehicle)... But killing a battery in a Grenadier is a bit of a task.

- Are you staying in hotels, ie. Not camping & relatively close to towns/cities/help?
- Is your trip CONUS or south of the border (or Canada)?
- What temps/weather will you encounter? Max high/low/Avg temps?
- How mechanically inclined are you?

Depending on how remote you go, I’d recommend medical kit, SATCOMS like Garmin inReach or SPOT, and a variety of hand tools.
- If you’re going to carry a compressor, carry a tire repair kit as well.
- Windshield repair kit

Personally I carry bottles of water, blanket, wet wipes and dry snacks/food JIC we get stuck for an extended period. During one winter I was stuck on a main highway for over 6hrs in a massive backup just outside DC. Trapped between guard rails on either side, there was no where to bail.

Battery powered angle grinder would have helped with those guardrails . Chart you own path if you know what I mean.

No offroad, If it’s been serviced, check the tyres, then just drive it.
And enjoy the scenery.

Just pack your clothes and go. Don’t over think it. It’s just another vehicle at the end of the day. Whatever you would normally take on a road trip is fine.

Yeah, I was so lucky. I learned to always have some food, water, and wet wipes for when Murphy strikes after that one.

That makes it easier. As long as you’re not too far away from civilization, you should be fine treating it like a normal road trip.

I’ve been known to take a cordless driver and a socket that’ll fit your lug nuts. I hate the tools that come with most cars.

Definitely get a windshield repair kit. Repairing a small chip and keeping it from becoming a crack while traveling is super useful….especially since finding a replacement Grenadier windshield might be akin to finding hens teeth on a road trip.

I learned the hard way in our Sprinter RV. What a PIA that was.

My first drive was from a dealership in Portland.The most direct route was 575 miles of interstate but that is no way to break in a new engine. I took back roads out of Portland planning to not be too far from the dealership to tow it back if something went wrong.

I wound my way South on backroads covering about 100 miles the first afternoon overnighting in central Oregon, day two was much of the same with a bit of highway along the coast to Eureka, California where I spent the night. Day 3 was mostly highway home.

I flew Portland with a couple days clothes in a bag and no tools. My Trialmaster did not dissapoint over the first 800 miles and has been rock solid since. Pack your things and go! Enjoy.
