Petrol/Gas Petrol/Gasoline Oil Specification Thread (B58 Engines)

In every car forum I visit (US V8, Porsche, BMW, etc.) the longest treats are about oil, additives and change intervals.

simply put in what is recommended by the manufacturer and comply with the periods, done!
Have you checked whether what's recommended is actually available...🤔

Wow I can't believe this thread is already at 3 pages!
And yet , I predict it will reach well into double figures....

Yeah, it’s insane to write circles around oils and intervals.
Do something meaningful and write some comments in the „sick of waiting „ thread

What’s the difference between SAE 0W-20 LL-17FE as specified for the gasoline engine and the
SAE 0W-20 LL-17FE+ that seems to be readily available

Don’t take this as gospel, but is it that the 17FE+ is the latest version and has just been brought to market after the first one was specified.

Again exercise with caution but I would suspect that it’s the same spec but may have had very small changes or something added which hasn’t really changed the spec overall.

0W-16, the Skim Milk of motor oil....
In the US market, what engine oil is recommended for the Petrol engine that meets specs and is available to purchase. From what I have read is should be a 0-20 viscosity. DaBull

Officially, I would go with whatever the sticker under the hood or the owner's manual states, assuming it is like the rest of the B58s, it should be anything that meets either BMW LL01FE or LL-14FE+; although, based on a quick Googling' of what B58 owners in other vehicles (BMW/Mk5 Supra) are using, it seems to be all over the board. As with all the Euro vehicles I've worked with over the past 20+ years, oils meeting the spec are more important than what weight/viscosity it says on the bottle (for instance, for many brands their VW502.00 approved oil was a 5W-30 or 5W-40, but for Mobil1 it was 0W-40)

I have 2,000 miles on the odometer of my new Petrol Grenadier and I am wondering when i should do my first oil change. There is no information in the owners manual and I have heard mixed opinions. Any advice would be much appreciated.

The owners manual states 12,000 miles for the first service

I want to keep my Turbo Charged (hard on oil) IG going forever. So I am doing 5,000 km (3,000 mile) oil changes using the recommended oil. Apparently the, very expensive to replace, timing chain will also appreciate it.

If you are working it hard then I can see the benefit. However if mainly doing road miles and not towing then that’s a bit excessive in my view especially if using the approved BMW spec oil. Everyone to there own though and as they say oil is cheaper than engines. 👍🏼. I’d end up doing 6 oil changes a year at that rate.
