Summary

I spent quite a bit of time researching what oil to use and how to conduct my first oil change on my B58 gas/petrol Grenadier. I thought I'd document and post up my findings, references and hopefully save others time so they can spend more time exploring, four wheeling or time with their loved ones. I'll reference the Dickin' Around Outdoors Ineos video for visual learners like myself. Feel free to debate anything since I've picked and choose everything I did from various sources on this forum and the manual itself.

  6. Locate oil filter housing, loosen housing and remove the housing and oil filter. I didn't need the swivel joint since a 3" extension and socket has enough clearance to loosen - https://youtu.be/LzTYyVVvp-s?si=6UddwVS_Jsagh-5i&t=422
  7. Replace filter element and re-install housing with 32mm socket at 18.5 ft/lb or 25nm - https://youtu.be/LzTYyVVvp-s?si=838siB-PIfmf3aeZ&t=677
  8. Reinstall plug with new gasket using 17mm socket at 18.5 ft/lb or 25nm - https://youtu.be/LzTYyVVvp-s?si=QrLkrb4Q_cdWx2Gi&t=799
  9. Add oil (I needed just under 7.5 quarts)
  10. Reinstall BMW/Grenadier engine cover with a nice procedure here - https://youtu.be/LzTYyVVvp-s?si=Cql9eYhVQPTgbw3l&t=908
  11. Bring engine up to temp, set in park and using the oil check procedure in the infotainment system.
  12. Enjoy the truck and change follow procedure all over again in 5k.

I would swap step 10 and 11 around. Start and have a look for leaks before fitting the cover and while the cover is off have a look around and make sure everything looks secure and not rubbing. Even the inexperienced DIYer can pick up on things that don't look right.
