I want to know whether this was actually a think ~ sort of reminds me of something used in one of the old Bond movies:

And I have just seen, mine was a GPS III as well - and it was from 1998, I think. But picture is quite similar.

Since then, I had a dozen different ones - but I am a GPS lunatic. The best one I ever had and still have and use is the GPSMAP 278. It is now over 15 years old and still works like charm.

Attitude is a piloty term we should have one of these then roll pitch and yaw in one place.
You should be ok driving in cloud with it

Oui, ils durent longtemps.

Et je viens de voir, le mien était aussi un GPS III. Mais l'image est assez similaire.

Depuis, j'en ai eu une douzaine de différents - mais je suis un fou du GPS. Le meilleur que j'ai jamais eu et que j'ai et utilise encore est le GPSMAP 278.

That's the greates series of Nav devices Garmin ever made. Mine is now 15 years old and still the best I have ever had.

The exactly same hardware is used in avionics with a different firmware: the 478. You can find it on zillions of airplanes - for a reason. And the brighter the sun, the better the display, fantastic!

I don't know the age of Largos device, but mine is around 15 years now - under hard conditions on motorbikes.

I think 15 years is almost impossible with nowadays consumer electronics - or at least exceptional.

~400km loop on the bike today. Thought I’d try using an iPhone 14 Pro for navigation, noting it’s nice screen.
0-150km, couldn’t be happier. Bright, responsive screen and bluetooth soundtrack filling the helmet. Then things started to unravel…
At ~150km mark, the thirsty iPhone blew the in-line fuse between bike battery and phone mount - no more charging.
At ~250km mark, phone exceeded maximum operating temperature (34C ambient) and switched off.
Familiar with the route so no drama, but now regretting de-installing my Zumo before testing alternatives fully.
The Zumo (595LM), despite being heavy and near unreadable in daylight, is at least indestructible.

I have had three Zumos on my motorbike, they all “bricked” eventually! They have a very small internal memory and once the update exceeds the memory capacity mine ceased all function during updating. Garmin well aware of problems but no help. they all worked well in my land rovers in car mounts though. On to Tim’s for both car and bike, end result will probably be the same though!

Yes, thinking a compromise approach is best: use the iPhone but via periodic stop-&-check rather than real time navigation.

All relevant to the IG as I’m pondering whether to install a gps for real-time use. Might do that for the Americas but rather use stop-&-check (usually the iPad) for Oz outback. Comprehensive paper maps up the sleeve for the latter, unlikely for much of South America…

OziExplorer fonctionne à partir de cartes scannées (mode bitmap) au format .ozfx3 avec un fichier .map pour la calibration.
Le site OziExplorer propose un outil pour développer des interfaces graphiques adaptées à ses propres besoins (AndroidScreen Désigner).

J'ai développé mes écrans propres pour faire de la navigation pour suivre une route prédéfinie, pour suivre une trace enregistrée, pour naviguer au compas (en zone désertique), pour utiliser une fonction odomètre (distance), etc.

Il est bien sûr possible de mettre les "routes" suivies sur Ozi Explorer (au format .gpx) sur la tablette Osmand+ et de trouver la meilleure route (en mode vecteur) pour rejoindre les points choisis.

En Irlande avec les tablettes montées sur support RamMount sur mon DEF 110.

I know that landscape - trekked from M’Hamid to Merzouga in 2005 (mid summer, I can’t recommend it) via Magag, Masouda, Ouzina, Touaz etc.
Hunting archaeological sites and just generally going walkabout, seeking le désert absolu etc.

L'utilisation de mon Garmin 276C lors d'un raid au Maroc en 2016 avec mon DEF 90 TD4 avec une tablette Samsung 8 pouces équipée du logiciel Osmand + pour le pilote et une seconde tablette 10 pouces pour le copilote, équipée du logiciel OziExplorer dans une version d'origine avant que je ne développe une nouvelle interface graphique plus conviviale.
Il y a également un Terratrip pour le suivi précis des distances parcourues (à 10 m près) au road book.
