Looks like Ineos will have to add more tech in Oz

I disagree.
All drivers have a diversity of skills but they all should have a minimum skill set at least, or get off the road.

Teaching people that they don't need to focus or take responsibility for their actions is a major problem.
What if the little light in the mirror doesn't work and someone relies on it and just changes lanes.

They think they don't need to look out the windscreen because the vehicle will automatically keep in the lane, adjust the speed and apply the brakes if the vehicle in front stops. Maybe they can get on their phone or do their makeup.

You avoid accidents by focus and concentration. Not giving up control to a machine.

This is why we have these clowns climbing into the back seat of their Tesla and letting auto drive take over.

I have driven on the autobahn at 230 kmh (143 MPH) and believe me I was looking out the windscreen, holding the wheel, not chatting and I was focussed.
I was also overtaken by several cars and a motorbike.
Your viewpoints are aspirational at best. Nothing else is in play to help guarantee a minimum bar of driver skills.

Again, you keep bringing up your personal approach for driving. I am saying that means nothing in a statistical context. A few good drivers on the road doesn’t move the statistical needle.

So in light of that , use technology, including self driving cars, in the future to take over something that humans are poorly optimized for.

Yeah I don’t give a sht if someone likes “driving”. A swarm of autonomous vehicles in communication with one another is more efficient than humans operators

If we don’t push back on bubblewrapping everyone and every activity, we are telling our lawmakers that we want fewer freedoms and even more regulations. A statistically safe future may be worse than a free and risky one IMO.

I am surprised to see such risk-aversion and bubblewrap-loving on a 4x4 forum.

My apologies.
It appears your view on the approach to driving is acceptable but not mine.
I guess we shall agree to disagree.

Sounds like my grandparents complaining about seatbelts

Proudly proclaiming such virtues in a forum will really move the societal needle, right?

I am just saying don’t even waste your breath. It does nothing

There comes a point with idiot-proofing an activity like driving or flying, where the human in the loop gets bored and does other things when they should be concentrating on the task in hand.

I think we have got to the threshold where humans need to be either fully committed to the activity or they should be excluded from the decision processes and the vehicle/aircraft/whatever should be totally autonomous.

Fortunately, Ineos is making a vehicle for those of us who still like “driving”. A heavy, truck-like handful. It’s the epitome of inefficient and probably a hazard. But fun!

How about this reasoning…

I don’t care if you like eating fun food. Society and children are healthier, with less disease if we ban soda and fried foods. (Boo to that.)

I don’t care if you like drinking alcohol. Domestic and societal violence drops dramatically if we ban booze. (Boo to that.)

Life can be made safe and efficient to the point where the fun is gone.

The Grenadier should not exist in an efficient world. Join the Tesla swarm of safe efficiency. The rest of us are going to go play…

i think comparing AEB to autonomous driving is a bit disingenuous. AEB (which in the US stands for Automatic Emergency Braking) is a system of last resort. Its not a system meant to augment the driver but to activate only in the very last moment when a collision is imminent. I have a hard time thinking of that as a nanny state that wraps people in a bubble wrap.

Of all the features that exists to control driver behavior or to replace the driver AEB is just about the farthest away from that idea.
AEB fires so late when there is risk of collision that there is literally no guarantee it will work for all, there is just about a statistical guarantee that it will work for many. It can't brake pre-maturely because unnecessary braking is also not safe.

This of all the safety system the government has come with is to me one of the very least offensive, and the least, if at all, intrusive. And i base this of driving many, many of the cars with these types of systems.

I mean we have been talking about Adas not being law in Australia for the past two years in this forum. No one knew that march 2025, it will become law? Government doesn’t drop this news with days of eta right?

Bloody hell,
All I did was post an article and note that it still wasn’t listed as a feature in the current sales brochure 3 months out, and all of a sudden I’m an ignorant jim beam swilling bogan who isn’t up to date with changes to modern driving technology requirements that to be honest I couldn’t give a fig about because I own the last of the brand new troglodyte 4wds ever made.

Ah well, I’m sure I’ll get over it. 🥳🥳

We talk about driving aids becoming mandatory. How about they mandate and invent something that automatically washes off all the bloody mud off the damned thing after a decent weekends driving so I don’t chip a nail or something doing it myself?? That’s something I could support.

Jim Beam eh? I thought more of you 😒

Nah I was just surprisingly amused a late breaking news is a law that is 60days away.

Autonomous braking required in Australia from March 25 by the looks of it.

I don’t see this listed in the current downloadable sales brochure??

Maybe they get around it by claiming it’s a commercial vehicle or some such technicality?

ANCAP are onto annoying, over-zealous safety systems.

ANCAP will soon dock points for ‘annoying’ car safety systems

The Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP) will examine not only whether vehicles feature certain safety systems, but also their effectiveness and annoyance to drivers from next year.
